Ventura Sailing Club hosts the Wild Turkey Classic Plastic on Thanksgiving weekend. This year was their 4th year hosting this fun and non-stressful race. The start is a reverse start and boats compete against the clock vice other boats fighting to be first across the starting line.
Entered Into the Spin class was an Olson 30, Schock 35, Benneteau 33 and an Tartan 10 meter. There was a fourth boat who’s name escapes my mind at this time.
The Non Spin class consisted of Spit Dog a DEL Rey 24, Red Wing an Ensign 24, Cut n Run a Hunter 27, Out Patient a CAL 2-29, Halona, an Islander 31, Hubba Hubba a CAL 34, Sea (something) a Cal 34 and Compass Rose a CAL 34.
With winds forecasted at less than 10 knots and variable. NOAA actually proved to be right. With light winds that changed from on shore to off shore and a swell that was 5 ft plus rolling in from the west it was hard to keep the light winds in the sails and point in the direction we intended to go. We did what we could to make it to the start line. Out Patient sailed by Trish and I trimming, was only 5 seconds from the gun, a very good start for such a race. Immediately out of the box we focused on the Islander and did what we could to close the gap. Trish held course and I adjusted sails. At the first mark we sailed right on top and over the Islander, next , the Del Rey and the Ensign. However, on the way to the next mark we changed places with the Islander more than once and it made the race very challenging and most fun. It was not until we got to just before the oil rig we found the sweet spot and and left the fleet behind.
Out Patient finished first with Red Wing 20 minutes behind us followed by Spit Dog, Halona and the lone CAL 34 Hubba Hubba who held in to finish while everyone else dropped out in these challenging conditions.
Another wonderful challenge and a beautiful day on the water for this 16 mile race in winds less tahn 10 knots and varied.

Randy,
I forwarded your narrative to the owner of the Pearson Ensign you mentioned that was in the race. His name is Paul Marx and he's coming down Tuesday morning to look at Eric's Endeavor 26! I was just talking to him on the phone, and he was telling me about the race and he said a Cal won it....YOU!
Small world.
