Lewmar Disassembly Help

David Biggs2009-01-23 18:27
I'm having problems removing the feeder arm from my self tailing winch to service it. I put off this job way (!) too long and the feeder are seems to have bonded to the hub. Any advice for freeing it would be appreciated. I cannot easiliy remove the winch and soak it in oil because its mounted on the cabin top and the bolts are concealed by my headliner down below. I cannot pry the feeder arm off because the "wavespring" plastic section below it is not robust. Lesson learned....service All your winches every year or two! Like I do with my primaries...... Thanks. Dave 80 Cal 35 Runnin Late Coyote Pt, SF BAy

first, if you need instructions and assembly drawings for your winch you can find them on my web site. Specifically, this might be helpful: http://l-36.com/winches/Winch_Service_Manual.pdf Looking at the way the winch is put together this is what I would do. I am assuming that you top cap off and it is just the feeder arm itself. I would soak the spline in vinagar for a couple days by just locally applying it to the joint. Then if it still didn't come off easily, I would buy a wheel or gear puller. Not sure this one will fit but it gives you an idea of what I am talking about: http://www.amazon.com/OTC-1023-Reversible-Mechanical-Grip-O- Matic/dp/B0002SRFN0/ref=sr_1_25? ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1232814876&sr=8-25 Allen --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "David Biggs" <imissedmyface@...> wrote: > > I'm having problems removing the feeder arm from my self tailing winch > to service it. I tried spray lube and a wheel puller but I could get the puller to fit. I'll try the vinegar idea though and look for different wheel puller types. Dave 80 Cal 35 Runnin Late Coyote Pt, SF Bay

I would probably make one custom, but you would need to be able to do some light machining. Maybe the vinegar will do the trick. Good luck and let me know how it turns out. If you get stuck, let me know. I go by Coyote Pt on the way to my boat at Sierra Pt. Allen

Dave, I found that WD-40 does an amazing job of melting the greases on winches. Over time, the grease soaks in particles, and freezes up the works. You might try it. Also, some winchmaker went to making some kind of phenolic bearings instead of rollers. Turned out lubricants would swell the material. The winch would get tight. Add more lubricant, and the thing would swell some more. I finally got a couple of new winches (different fab) from the vendor. I think the company was out of business not too long thereafter.
