Rotted Deck

I am finally starting to do some work on my Cal 25 now that weather seems to be breaking. In inspecting the interior I found a 6"X6" area on the port side straddling the beam that is rotted away. There appears to be no damage to the beam although there is a bit of sag beginning to set in. Any suggestions of fixing this one and only soft spot? Jeff

If the beam has been removed or replaced before, I'm assuming it isn't tabbed to the deck. If this is the case, the best way to handle this is to drop the stick, remove the chainplates, take out the beam, cut out and replace the rotted section of deck core and reinstall everything. If you have water getting down onto the beam, then there is a chance for hidden damage. Also, the deck rotting out above the beam could be a symptom of a waterlogged mast pedestal. That should be addressed at the same time as recoring the deck. Just my $0.2 Cheers, Scott S Cal 25 #1651 Indefatigable Annapolis, MD To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com From: je… [at] sbcglobal.net Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2009 15:05:27 +0000 Subject: [Cal_Boats] Rotted Deck I am finally starting to do some work on my Cal 25 now that weather seems to be breaking. Jeff, I have just accomplished this very same repair on a Cal-25 here in Pensacola. Her deck beam was sagging but was also visibly rotted. I fabricated a new deck beam as well as replacing the core plywood from the head aft on the port side and the port bulkhead. I was lucky in that the mast step was not wet or rotten. It is a messy dirty time consuming chore but is very doable. (I think the best time saving tool for me was a feinmaster multi-tool that is similar to a cast saw. Rockwell makes one as well called the sonicrafter.) Tear it out and fix it right. Be very careful and think before you cut. Good luck. Mike 1965 Cal-40 #44 /Celtic Naut /BTW, I only charged $850 to do this particular job and lost my butt because it is so time consuming. I figure I should have charged at least $1500 not including materials after all was said and done.
