The King will probably be out here in Marina del Rey for his annual "King of Spain" Star class regatta later this year. I don't think he will have lost much sleep over not seeing a boat parade. Nice that you made the effort, tho. Say, do you miss the guys in their ice cream salesman outfits, the NavalAviationOfficerCandidates over-running the city on week ends? I was there in the hey-days, '69-70 Vietnam War Era. Things must be pretty quiet now? Like...dead? except during the tourist season, I would guess....now that the big Naval Air Station "Annapolis of the Air" has been closed? Other than the fear of death hanging over me..in an unpopular war..that was winding down...I really enjoyed my 9 months of training in Pensacola...even it I didn't realize it at the time. Do they still have that funky bar on Pensacola Beach that serves green colored beer to the ladies on Wednesday nights (the gals would let us sip on their free beers when the waitress wasn't looking)? The place in town with live rag-time music and saw dust on the floor? The names of those places are on the tip of my tongue. Ah, the City of Five Flags. I was there for Hurricane Cecil, which skirted the city 50 miles off shore, ripping the roof off one of our pool builings with the Dempsy Dunker.(as seen in the movie Top Gun). I was out that night driving around town on my motorcycle, with tree branches flying passed my nose. I'd never seen a Hurricane up close and didn't want to miss it. A year later I saw the cover of Popular Science Magazine on a news stand, the cover headlined: Cecil-World's Worst Hurricane, recorded winds of 225 MPH" Very lucky. The storm later swerved and came on shore in Biloxi and flatten the city..I saw the destruction a few months later....looked like an H-Bomb hit it. Unfortunately, the request for sailboats wasn't made far enough ahead of time. There was absolutely nobody out for the "Pass and Review" which is very sad. King Juan Carlos used to be an Olympic sailor and Pensacola celebrates its 450th birthday this year. It was cool of him and Queen Sofia to come. Of course its Thursday and most people had to work, but everybody? What a bummer. It was the perfect excuse to play hooky and go sail. Another bummer is that not only were we unable to take out our Cal-40, Celtic Naut, we weren't able to get Reggie and Barb's Cal-36, Submit, out of the slip due to low tide in the bayou. Tom's Cal-46 was stuck in the mud as well. Our client that just had his transmission changed out for the 4th time since October (Guess which kind...) needed a sea trial anyway so we borrowed his Morgan 32, North Beach, to go out. The wind was out of the N-NW 15-20 g25 and temps were in the low 60's with full on sunshine. There was hardly any chop. Basically a perfect day for sailing. Too bad Cal's weren't represented except by their sailors. Mike and Beth

I figured he'd care less about a boat parade. I was more interested in showing that the good ol' U.S of A. is actually interested in sailing and could put forth a fleet for any excuse. I screwed the pooch with that pipe dream! As for the rest of the questions, Mr. Vandiver is eminently more qualified to answer them since he's been here a lot longer. I do know that the swabbies still train here and you see them all over the place. *McGuire's Irish Pub* ... when'd they close the AOC thing? I went to Photoschool there. :-o Gerald Sobel wrote: > Do they still have that funky bar on Pensacola Beach that serves green > colored beer to the ladies on Wednesday nights (the gals would let us > sip on their free beers when the waitress wasn't looking)? We went to McGuire's last St Patricks day. It was crowded and happening. There are a lot of nice places here but we haven't been able to partake...we spend most of what we earn on the boat instead of beer but we hope to be in a different position soon. :-) Not sure about AOC. There is a new computer warfare school run by the Navy here. So I'm willing to bet that there are as many military guys here as before.
