That is a great collection of Lapworth design info! However, I looked at the CAL 39-1 and the picture and drawing are wrong....they are showing a CAL 39-2 (first built 1977 contrary to the 39-2 info posted, Oh well!). Still, a real good gallery of great boats! Rod Johnson On Fri, 20 Feb 2009 10:30:22 -0800 (PST) Lord Nougat <lo… [at] yahoo.com> writes: Amen to that! I last bought gas at Catalina over a year and a half ago; lately I've been motoring a little just to dispose of what must surely be deteriorated fuel... though I cannot start that motor if there is any breeze at all... that would be just wrong! I like being able to pull the prop all [or at least mostly] out of the water, so that to my imagination we're going faster. Still, I never read the part of the manual that explained the need for a cavitation plate thingy for motoring. Now I have another item to lurk around Kelly's looking for! Also, I need to repair the forward cockpit drains, as the previous owner's idea of a great fix was to put sink drainplugs in, and resin over the tops of those. Apparently the hoses that were supposed to run to the motor well for those drains were leaky or something. He had a different set of priorities or something - the cockpit still drains okayish out the aft drain, or in OMFG situations, out the motor well - but fixing those foreward drains is still on my to do list. Oh, since I'm prattling on here, the funniest thing happened yesterday. My brother and his lady had some time off, so they came down for a nice little daysail [sorry Easterners]. It was a lovely day, and a great sail, despite no breezes over 10kts... but still there was "racing" to be had, as while we were beating our way back from the Long Beach side of the harbor, a shockingly lovely other little sloop kept gaining on us. I pointed out this new competitor to the crew, and it was agreed that we MUST not let them catch us, for some reason. Well, it took them quite some time to catch up, but catch up they did. When we were within hailing distance we found out she was a Lapworth designed Endeavour 26. I guess we did something wrong... as this Endeavour apparently has about the same waterline as the Cal 20 - AND a huge keel! I found a page about this boat: http://www.sailboatdata.com/VIEWRECORD.ASP?CLASS_ID=3123 At least we didn't get beat by a Catalina or something - as if that happens! Only people who spend their time motoring have to smell exhaust. I am reminded of L. If you would rather run an outboard than go sailing, then you should buy a powerboat. Otherwise, the outboardf smell makes us grateful when we turn the noisy thing off and enjoy the peace of sailing.
