CAL 34 and Slings
Husar, Charlie [USA]2009-02-25 01:13 UTC
Don't recall if I responded to the request or not. Age....
There are less than 2 1/2' between the front of the rudder and the end
of the prop. A misplaced sling could really do a trick on the prop
shaft. I measured slings to be 14-16 inches wide (at the yard I was
in).
Looks like the safest thing is to put a piece of tape on the toe rails 4
1/2' forward of the aft tips of the side toe rails. Bring the slings in
so they are centered on the tape pieces. This should center the sling
between prop and rudder. If needed, once the sling is sort of touching
the bottom of the hull, it can be moved forward a 1 1/2' or so (above
the prop).
If anyone wants to pay me back for the advice, I have extra sanders and
grinders looking for talented hands to operate them. : - ]
Cheers
Charlie

Hi, Charlie-
I consider this a timely and complete response to the question I
posted. In addition, if you want to bring your boat out to
Bellingham, WA I have my own sanders and gringder(s) to help you
out. . .
Thanks for the info-

What an offer, Phil! I'm checking Southwest Airlines schedules right
now. No sweat. Don't need my boat. I'll grind on your 34.
Cheers

Hi Charlie,
I will second Phil's email. Come on out to Bellingham, I also have sanders
and grinders and 2 teen boys we can put to work as well.
The Seaview North Yard is right out the back door from where I work so it is
convenient for me as well. Lol

Ok, now wait a minute. If there is to be a neighborhood boat workshop
in the Sound, I want in on it. My 34 needs a bottom job and I have
lot's of sanders and stuff too. Charlie: You've got your work cut out
for you.

I am very picky as to Porter Cable dual action 6 inch, and Makita
converted 4.5" grinders with flapper disks. Kind of a Zen thing. I
will reserve the fine points of stick-um or hook and loop, or flapper
disk composites for later when negotiations get serious.
Cheers
