Cal 29 prop size

I have a 1972 Cal 29-2 with a Bukh 10hp diesel. It currently has a 12" X 12" solid prop. Does this sound correct? I don't have a problem when underway, the boat will do hull speed in calm water, but backing down and acceleration are pathetic. Joe

What is the boat's waterline length, the reduction gear ratio, and at what rpm does the engine make it's maximum horsepower? 12 x 15, 2 blade [ this prop has a large blade area, making it an excellent compromise between a 3 blade and a 2 blade prop ] 12 x 14, 3 blade Joe DeMers Sound Marine Diesel LLC www.soundmarinediesel.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Joseph McCloskey To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, February 26, 2009 11:48 AM Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 29 prop size Waterline 24', engine RPM @10hp= 3000, reduction gear 2.5: 1 --- On Thu, 2/26/09, Joe DeMers <je… [at] mindspring.com> wrote: From: Joe DeMers <je… [at] mindspring.com> Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 29 prop size To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Date: Thursday, February 26, 2009, 8:10 AM What is the boat's waterline length, the reduction gear ratio, and at what rpm does the engine make it's maximum horsepower? My prop guy did comment that a 2:1 gear would be preferred, so a 12 x 9, 3 blade prop could be used. That shallower pitch is preferable for a sailboat. Joe Thanks for the info. Sounds like this would give me more thrust. All bets are off when using a Martec folding prop. These props are designed for racing, and have little in common with a fixed blade prop. Contact Martec for their suggestions.
