In 1987, the STARS & STRIPES crew applied a thin film material to the
hull that contained grooves like a record (we do remember records?). It
apparently passed muster...no successful protests. That was when the
races were in Fremantle, Western Australia. Not to open a "can of worms",
but one of the better AC competitions in recent memory, it seems to have
just sunk to new low points each time since!

Along the dimple/sharkskin line of thought, I seem to recall one year
during the Americas Cup some discussion of this topic. Purposely
creating dimples or bumps on the surface of the boat to increase speeds
through the water. But it was a long time ago. I believe the races were
still held in Newport.
