DYK_CAL History
Randy Alcorn2009-03-07 06:46 UTC
I always talk to a gent in our yacht club, by the name of Walter.
Did you know he was the first person to buy a CAL?
Apparently Jack Jensen and Ernie Fink (?(Wink)) was going to build a CAL 24 in the Santa Monica airport, Walter told them he would buy one.
After his purchase, him and his wife took off for the Caribean and they lived on it for a while. The boat had a swing keel and it weighed 400 lbs. After they got back to SOCAL, Walters wife wanted a bigger boat.
Soooooo, Ernie wanted out and Jack gave him the boat. Then he hooked up with Bill Lapworth. Bill built the CAL 40 and the rest is history.

Wow, living in a 400lb boat is hard core, our Cal 20 must weigh easily over quadruple that!

Are we talking about the same Ernie Wink from San Pedro, he may have operated "Shelter Point?" back in the 70's.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Perfect day for a sail

It is official, we got a third, 1st place was Kevin Dickmans, CAL 25, "Zumma Jay". The winds really layed down on the downward leg, we sailed off the wind hoping to be able to pick up speed on a reach, however the wind shifted back to the northwest and the Capri 25 passed us just before the finish line. The CAL 25, well, you know the syaing, if you can see them, most likely they have won. Kevin closed in on us in the very light airs and it was enough to correct out. I think the 3 of us finished within a few minutes of each other.
For some reason, I could not tack yesterday. I must of blew 3 or 4 tacks, but we were the first boat to Gina in our class. Once we rounded the rig the wind really slowed down, I ended up putting up the patched up light air number one to keep it out of the water.
Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, we rounded Gina with a pod of 4-5 whales, they surfaced and gave us the flukes I don't know how many times. They stayed beside us for almost a mile.
It was another beautiful day out thier today as well, I rode my bicycle down there but only ended up cleaning up after last night. Doug started making rum and cokes and the night was full of stories and bragging.
I saw Clay take out his CAL 34 today, he put up baby netting. Maybe he will start coming out with us.
Have Fun

I was visiting in LA recently and sailed aboard the Lynx (www.privateerlynx.org) out of Ventura on a Sunday afternoon. I did not see any Cals out there.
Where is Channel Islands in relation to Ventura? Is this a Yacht Club, Town or just a reference to the Channel Islands?

read,
the channel islands are a group of islands off the coast of southern
california..
if you sailed out of ventura then you might have seen anacapa or
santa cruz island, if it was a clear day..
they are a group of 6 islands that make up a national park http://
www.nps.gov/chis/
also the harbor that we dock our boats at is called "channel islands
harbor" http://www.channelislandsharbor.org/
its just a few miles down the coast southeast of ventura harbor...
the lynx is now over in channel islands harbor.. it was docked at the
whales tail dock on saturday afternoon..
looks like a spectacular ship to be aboard..
hope this clears up any confusion..

Thanks
Yes I did see them.
We came about before we reached them.
It was a fun and interesting sail.
I did see an International Folkboat.
Very pretty hull.
Unfortunately no whales.
