Re: [Cal_Boats] Rescued Cal 20??
Cal 20?
Of course, if it was a rescued Cal 24, Cal 25, or other fine Cal, (or Lapworth...or even, gulp! G.O.B.), I wouldn't object, either!....as long as it was made in the USA.

Just got a cool idea!
After President Obama gets his kids a rescued dog, maybe he can get a rescued Cal 20 and sail her on the Potomac! What a great gesture for the energy/global warming crises!

I've been meaning to write to you for a while about the subject of Cal
20 you're about to acquire seeing as you've won the auction. I
purchased mine about 18 months ago: one that the previous owner had
tried to sell, give away, and then paid a boat hauler to transport to
the state landfill. Yes, the boat hauler put it up for sale on
Craigslist. I saw the ad, hemmed and hawed for several months and then
bought it for $750.00.
The result of a fair amount of work was a delightful summer last year,
and after reading about the fun ther're having on the west coast
sailing, launched the boat last Sunday and went for my first sail of
the year today on Narragansett Bay. No Traffic!
This is what is so astonishing. You can buy one of these sturdy,
handsome little vessels for under a thousand bucks, add a little sweat
equity, and then you're sailing. If you read the glossy yacht
magazines, it looks like you need a 45 footer for an entry-level yacht,
at a price many times my annual salary. But wait, there's this other
option, and real people can actually own a boat and go sailing. It's
painful to think of a Cal 20 headed for the landfill--what a waste.
Maybe with hard economic times, people will be looking for these
options.
