Charlie, I think you are right.
The X is only in the papers, the hull is marked
CAB2948 0773
Just a blank space between 8 and 0

Walt, I would doubt that "X".
CAB - CAL Boats
29 - Model
48X - Hull Number?
0773 - Came off the line in July of 1973
There was a later scheme for IDs that had a letter in the last 4 alphas for the month code.
The whole code thing was kind of whacked because there was not enough room for models and hull numbers.
Cheers

Walter (Walt?), that was the first year they were required to stamp the
Hull ID on the exterior right stern of the boat. Before that, you had
to go fishing inside the stern (or under some parts like drawers) to
find a hull number.

All boats built after 31 October, 1972 (AKA 1973 models, generally) are
required to have the 12-Digit Hull I.D. Number permanently marked on the
outside of the transom, near the Starboard side.
However, that location seems to be ignored by Bangor Punta, since a
friend of mine has a CAL 21 with the HIN located near the center of the
transom and the HIN on my O'DAY Day Sailer II is also centered.
