CAL31 Headliner

Hello All I've searched the database, and files with no luck. (Not like the old Sailnet archive.anyone save those?) I want to replace the original (1980) vinyl headliner. Looks pretty straight forward, removing some screws, and a trim piece (4 screws) around the hatch in the main salon area. These are split in two pieces down the center. (port/starboard) My question is who has done it, and what did you use for the trim piece for the hatch at the companionway area. Mine is glued in, and looks like it will be destroyed when I remove it. Ideas? TIA, Patrick CAL31 #118

I did it when I replaced the slides for the companionway hatch. You are right that the trim pieces will be destroyed, including the one in the hatch in the main cabin roof. To replace them, I used some right-angle plastic edging that I screwed on (maybe 1" on each side). It doesn't call attention to itself, but it is not nearly as neat as the original pieces. I have been searching everywhere for a replacement for the plastic "L" shaped trim around the companionway hatch too. (The hatch in the main saloon would require the same trim.) The challenge is the radius in the leading edge corner, which requires flexibility. I've considered teak but it requires money and screwing up five separate pieces. I've decided against that for now. Has anyone found a plastic material source for this project? You'll probably have to be logged in to the group to see the photos, but here's the "Before" on our '77 2-29 http://tinyurl.com/cw9pl7 and here's the "After" http://tinyurl.com/cw9pl7 The little plastic runners were crap and having been installed with steel staples just made the decision to scrap it and start with something new all the easier. The teak strips that you see in the second photo serve to give a "finished" look to the recessed rope lights (http://tinyurl.com/cw9pl7) while hiding the mounting of the headliner. The tracks for the rope lights were installed first. Starting at the outer edges, a 3/8" batten was made to butt against the light track. The material was stapled to the back side of the batten and then wrapped and stretched to the next batten and stapled. The center section was installed basically the same way. If I ever need access to deck hardware under the vinyl, all I have to do is remove one of the crown moldings, unscrew the batten, and that section of the headline drops to allow unfettered access. The molding on my hatchway was goobed in with 5200 or something similar. The plastic molding will eventually make way for teak trim that should tie in rather nicely with the teak crowns on either side of the rope lights. Hope this helps.... I've replaced the overhead liner, including one of the plywood pieces because it had rotted. It was a job, that's for sure. I got the fabric from an upholstery shop. My mistake was using a spray-on glue. The fabric started separating from the ply only a few weeks after installation. %$#^! But it still looks better because the fabric is new, not the 1984 ancient crap. The trim piece around the hatch came out without any major problem, but I was intensely careful as I knew there would be no easy replacement (same thing with the plastic trip around the companionway hatch). If you know that you have to destroy it, then I would concentrate on something completely different. It's not a structural piece; it's only covering the overhead ply gap around the hatch. Just a simple piece of thin teak plywood cut to shape around the bottom would do... Good luck! Jack Cal 31 #198 Melantho
