Bottom Painting - Racing Season Starts Soon

Hello Everyone, I put Magic in the yard last Thursday, and she is scheduled to go back in the water tomorrow. My plan was to have the bottom soda blasted and the repainted with Pettit Vivid, but sometimes things just don't work out. The soda blaster guy called me two days prior to the haulout and told me that he had a job on a 65' boat and I would have to wait till he got around to it. I promptly fired him. The contractor I hired to repaint the bottom has a good reputation in our area for quality work. He inspected the hull and suggested that we go ahead and have the hull peeled and a new barrier coat applied. The guesstimate was roughly a month in the yard and around $5K. So in the end after discussion with the Admiral, we had the hull heavily sanded, the "pits" faired, and then repainted with Trinidad. The photos below are before any work was done. I'll post more later. Photos of Magic in the yard Michael Duvall s/v Magic, Cal 2-27 Pompano Beach, FL

Michael - I did the bottom of my Cal 39 last Jan thru June after work and on weekends and if I had the extra 5K I might of?had it done.? I did have it powerplaned which I was initially concerned about but was the only way my yard would allow it to be done.? They claim that even with a tent, that the soda get everywhere ie: all over the yard and on other boats.? After the power planing I spent a lot of time sanding what little remaining bottom paint was left and getting it faired nice.? The PO had about 20 years of paint on it so sanding it down was not an option (my arms and shoulders would not have lasted).? They charged me $1200 for the power planing and it was worth every cent.? I did a lot of repairs to the bottom including glassing over the seam down the middle of the boat after removing as much of the loose filler putty as I could and replacing with West System epoxy filler.? There were a number of other minor repairs that I did as well so 5K just for stripping and painting may be a bit high but not totally out of the ball park.? I also did 4 new coats of epoxy barrier coat and 2 coats of Vivid White which looks great and my diver loves for its ease of cleaning.? This year will be the test for ease of cleaning as we did not haul out this year (I am on the Choptank River off of the Chesapeake btw). Good luck racing this season. Michael I have stripped my 227 to the bare hull and applied a barrier coat twice (I did my cal 25 once as well). I did all of the work alone using a combination of scrappers, chemical strippers, razors and sand paper. Each time the job took about 8-10 days of about 6 hours or more, it wasn't fun. If you are taking more pictures I would love to see a shot of your rudder and prop distances. It looks like your rudder is slightly different than mine and you have a feathering prop. When I installed a folding prop some years ago I had to shorten my engine shaft, cutlass bearing and take a bite out of the rudder in order to fit on a 10" diameter martec with a 14 pitch.
