Rotating mast/Wing mast
ryan_on_the_beach2009-03-27 04:55
Does anyone have experience or information on construction building techniques/ plans for
Rotating Masts & Wing Masts? Or just masts in general.
I've found a little information which I've posted
http://www.psychosnail.com/blog/post/Rotating-Masts-Wing-Masts.aspx
but what I've got so far is very technical on aerodynamics etc. I'm looking for something
more practical.
Thanks!!!

hi Ryan
before I purchased my Cal 40, I had a 26M Magregor with a rotating, tear drop shaped mast. The rig quickly got the boat up to hull speed, was simple and never gave me any problems. If your boat is the 24-28 ft range take a look at this mast, perhaps copy it , or buy one from Magregor. The rotating mast is explained at http://www.macgregor26.com/sailing_performance/sailing.htm. Be aware that the spreaders rotate on the mast also.
hope this helps

Wing masts are more likely to be used on high-speed boats like
iceboats. DNs use rotating masts, and some of the larger, faster boats
use fancier mast sections. Search on iceboat masts.
