Our friend Rob Wyman made the trip in his Cal 29 last September as noted below. An ex-Coast Guarder, he could provide you with some valuable info. The blog of the trip was pretty informative. Fortunate for his CG background he was able to call for asistance and got towed in to port at a couple of locations after suffering a bad alternator that fried everything, and then I think there was a fuel issue.....anyway my understanding is that getting close to October the weather for transit defintely worsens...... --- On Thu, 11/20/08, ltjgwyman <lt… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: From: ltjgwyman <lt… [at] yahoo.com> Subject: [Cal_Boats] Re: Cal 29 Voyage Planning(Rob) To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Date: Thursday, November 20, 2008, 12:25 PM I wanted to update the board from my initial post last spring regarding plans to sail Gypsy Bumboat to Los Angeles from Brownsville Marina (Bremerton, WA). My wife and I had a chance to meet some Cal folks from this site last summer at Elliot Bay Marina. Anyway, the trip is complete and lasted 3 weeks, which included the first week winding my way thru the San Juan's and ending in Port Angeles for the official jump off with my 3 man crew. My nephew, who was new to sailing, posted some pretty entertaining updates along the trip and I just uploaded the files to the "files" section of this board under "Cal 29 Voyage from Seattle to Los Angeles". Gypsy is at home in her new berth in Cabrillo Marina and I may have a chance to sail her to Catalina Island for the Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks for the feedback regarding my plans & I look forward to meeting some new local Cal sailors. Bob just bounced an email to me regarding this post - I'll reload my files when I get a chance - probably this evening. It looks like an interesting post. I'll probably throw $.02 worth after I get a chance to look the thread over more. I don't want to overstate or understate the venture; I've only done it once, and there are way too many variables in each situation between boat, crew & weather, but we didn't encounter any conditions that were too worrisome. The strongest weather was about 30 kt winds and 8' seas & we finished the trip in the planned 14 days with 3 brief stops for showers & rest. Read: Glad to hear you liked it. I took the boat to Catalina with my son at Thanksgiving where we met up with my nephew David & family (Chief Science Officer). He was scuba diving & much more in his element. Last month I sailed to San Diego while on active duty with the Coast Guard for 2 weeks. I was able to meet up with Bob & Diane Connell from Jolleygood (from this group) while they were visiting from Seattle & spend some time sailing around the bay. Otherwise, I just joined the PSSA & plan to join in some of their races around the channel islands.
