rudder lube

HI I have had my C 2-29 for a year now and am slowly getting her in shape. This past season I noticed that the steering was stiff at times, especially when weather helm developed. This I have determined was due to the grease in the rudder tube, which had the properties of tar on a cold day. I have dropped the rudder and cleaned the rudder tube and shaft with acetone. My question is: what do I use to lubricate the shaft or should I leave it dry? Joe

Joe, should be lubricated. I use white lithium grease, but I'm sure others have other preferences. It is kind of like one of those personal choices. Should not be thick. I greased it every few days in Transpac and once a year otherwise. I used a waterproof grease but can't remember what it was. I had a grease gun on board.
