Cal 2-29 Transom cutout
Joseph McCloskey2009-04-10 18:38 UTC
Hi
First let me say thanks for the rudder lube answers. I have another question. I understand that the Cal 29 came standard with the transom cut down to accommodate outboard power. My boat is an inboard with wheel steering. I was thinking that if I cut the transom as it was in the outboard version, it would be handy for getting in and out of the boat when swimming. Has anyone done this? I realize that some reinforcing and finish work would have to be done, but altogether not a bad job.

How would one go about reinforcing that area? I guess this could make it
easier in a MOB situation for picking them up.

no additional reinforcement appears to have been added to the transom area of any of the old CAL's whci were available in either inboard or outbard configuration. They may have made sure there was some additional 5200 between the hull and the cockpit pan before adding inner and outer metal guides, through bolted, on each side of the cutout as holders for removeable splash boards.
There are many of them out there. several should respond to your question.

There is a Cal 29 owner by the name of Alan Day, in the San Pedro area that has cut the transom out and made a fiberglass slide in board to close it up. it is a beautiful factory quality opening. My only question, with a heavy following sea will you be vulnerable with it open? Or benefit from the additional drainage

My brother-in-law cut the transom of ours before we took ownership.
I've debated glassing it back. Rail, backstay, and rudder make going over the side easier.
If you're in SoCal, you're welcome to take a look.
Best,
John
