Thanks for the many expressions of sympathy. Here's a brief postscript. I
went to Home Depot to buy a bunch of the heavy grit grinding disks that do
such a great job, but they didn't have any. A check of the Roto-Zip Web site
confirms that THEY DON'T MAKE THEM ANYMORE!!! It looks like I've got myself
into a Fein mess, I guess. I'm going shopping. <g>

Here's why those abrasive discs have been discontinued -
The dust created when grinding is inhaled into the Zip's motor, and trashes the bearings and windings. Now the Zip will last longer without that dust.

Roto Zip was bought out by Bosch. Home Depot still stocks them up here may be
special order in your area.
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/tls/1110470399.html
Models available:
http://www.rotozip.com/SiteLanding_Page.htm
Fein 's are great tools. Classics of the future, but, a good rotozip for 50
bucks will do the same but limited with respect to options available with the
Fein. For that I would use other dedicated tools, and the price point still
is lower.
To each his own. Ya cant beet a good tool and never ever criticize someones
tool kit. That's worse then talking politics.
Best of luck

Alfred, Rockwell similar tool (to Fein) that is cheaper. I have one of
each. Seem similar. Fein might last longer (dunno). Truth be told, I
was never really a Roto-Zip fan. I'm into bigger heavy duty tools that
gouge big holes and maximize destruction. Roto-Zip makes for a mediocre
Sawz-All.

Ok, you all are in trouble! All of this talk of men and their tools and love of this tool and that tool and your continuous outpouring of links to tool websites has pushed me over the edge. I just purchased the Fein 250Q Top and my palms are already sweating even though it will take two days to arrive!! I am traveling to Delaware to work on getting my father's home ready for sale after he has been moved into an assisted living center, and reading the reviews I couldn't think of a single tool that I could take that would help me with all of the tasks I face -- plumbing repair, sanding sheetrock, removing tile sections, etc, etc. Then, I get to come home and sand the teak rails on my boat and get them ready for varnish! Having done this before with orbital palm sanders, I can't wait to try the Fein in close quarters work on the teak. I'm beginning to hope that the bottom needs painting this fall!!
Way to go, guys. Boy is my crew gonna be pissed when she finds out what I just bought. 'Scuse me while I step out to a florist real quick and do some necesary damage control.

More Tools (Don)
Husar, Charlie [USA]2009-04-09 02:35 UTC
Don, I think you will find the Fein fine for precision work and tight
areas. It is great for cutting straight lines at edges, sanding into
corners, and the like. I believe that the Fein idea was created for
things like cutting casts off people's body parts without messing up the
person a whole lot. For grunt stuff like bottoms, my favorite is a 6"
dual action orbital made by several vendors. Go hook and loop 6 hole
with dust extractor fitting that goes to a shop vac. Going one step
further in grunt work (like removing old tabbing and fillet bonds), I go
with the 4 1/2" grinder converted to a sander using flapper discs.
I got the Fein, I got the Porter Cable 6", I got the Makita 4 1/2", I
got a Makita belt sander, I got the Makita skinny belt sander with arm,
I got a SawzAll, Skilsaw, and Jigsaw. In many cases, more than one.
Just tooling along. Or as the Catman on this list used to say:
"AAAAaaaaaaarggggggggg...." (A direct quote)
Just think, for the price of going out to dinner in many places, one can
have a nice tool that continues to please long after the heartburn from
that dinner fades away.
Cheers

While were on the subject my all time favorite is a 1934 9" Southbend Lathe, it will even turn a mast head sheave as well as some shafts, it still turns like the day it was shipped..
Love the old crank that turns the Farymann and disengages when starts. I have appreciated tools for years and patented inventor of hand tools, it is a very expensive process, but a great creative outlet.. Can't wait to apply some high tec. toward sailboat hardware.

I had bought a roto zip to cut grout out of a kitchen counter. The switch failed from the grout dust in one day. I took it back and bought a de walt grinder with a tile blade and still working great on tile grout, metal cut-off and sanding wood.
