thinking of buying a cal...

hey you all im new to the group. my friend and i have been looking at boats and we're thinking of buying a cal 29. it's a 1977, and in pret ty good shape. it has a ballast of 3350 and displacement of 8000lbs. i want to do blue water sailing with it and i was wondering what you all's perspectives were of sailing it in the oceans. where they can and can't go, how they handle in heavy weather, etc. my biggest concern is getting a boat that can't go places i want to go. we're starting by sailing in the sound of NC, then hopefully up and down the coast. eventually, who knows? also, any other questions i should ask the seller would help. thanks! -steve

steve, that cal 29 can go anywhere... as long as you equip it properly.. i personally dont sail blue water, but have heard of many guys who have.. my longest voyages have been island hopping, usually around 12 hour passages at the most... but thats really all i like doing.. one thing everyone will tell you here is to try and get a good look at the "dreaded beam" check the archives here and you can find a ton of information about it... other than that a good surveyor can tell you everything else that might be wrong with the boat.. i highly recommend getting a good surveyor.. you wont regret getting one of the best 29' boats ever built... hope this helps cheers eric jackson BAREFOOT 1971 CAL 29 CHANNEL ISLANDS CA.

All older boats, particularly Cals, Check the beam as mentioned, and look at bulkheads (near the hull deck joints and chainplates) for rot. Make sure to use a moisture meter or a screw driver handle to tap the deck around fittings to find wet/soft spots. As with any boat, the engine, electronics, electrical system, standing rigging, bottom rot/blisters and sails are always suspect. Always survey the boat before buying, so you know what you are getting in to... Make a list of the costs, and when they have to happen. If you are newer to sailing, make sure you pick a boat so you can get at least a year of sailing her without much work, so you can get familiar and make your mind up as to what you want to do to her to make her yours. I have seen hundreds of boats in the yard, getting perfected.. and haven't sailed for a decade.. do not let this happen. For me, I did not really care much, as I knew I was willing to fix everything to get the boat of my dreams! (I have fixed everything, at least once.. and still very happy) dEmO From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of mtkennedy1 Sent: Tuesday, April 14, 2009 3:38 PM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: [Cal_Boats] Re: thinking of buying a cal... --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com<mailto:Cal_Boats%40yahoogroups.com>, stevie <creepyeyeball@...> wrote: > > hey you all > im new to the group. my friend and i have been looking at boats and we're thinking of buying a cal 29. it's a 1977, and in pret ty good shape. > it has a ballast of 3350 and displacement of 8000lbs. i want to do blue water sailing with it and i was wondering what you all's perspectives were of sailing it in the oceans. where they can and can't go, how they handle in heavy weather, etc. > my biggest concern is getting a boat that can't go places i want to go. we're starting by sailing in the sound of NC, then hopefully up and down the coast. eventually, who knows? > > also, any other questions i should ask the seller would help. > thanks! > -steve You might look at this: http://www.user.dccnet.com/rdarcy/calstart.html Also, check the beam. Hey Stevie, I have had a 1977 Cal 2-29 for 7 years. The main thing I would check is the dreaded beam which was and is just fine on my boat. The things I had to take care of right away were: Fuel tank was corroded through The old Farymann diesel was shot and had to be replaced. Halyard were shot. Sails were shot. Most of this due to lack of care by the P.O. Once I took care of those issues, she has been a wonderful boat. I find that she will take much rougher weather than I am willing to deal with. I have not blue water sailed her, but with the proper equipment, I believe she would do well. I know others have done such with the 29. She is a sturdy, fast boat. Steve, When I was looking for a Cal in 2006, Roger Jones (now deceased) provided a check list for inspecting boats. I just posted this list under the "files" section on this site. Hope this helps; it sure helped me. Hey Steve, Welcome to the wonderful world of Cal boats. Where in NC are you looking? I am one of the few NC members on the list. We keep our Cal 33 in Oriental. Have you found something in the area?
