I'd still like to know what the heck was the reason that Bill Lapworth specified 3/32" wire for the backstay on the CAL 20 and 21 when the rest of the rig is 1/8" (well, I can understand the jumpers being 3/32"). The backstay on our 21 never had a problem in the 39 years we owned her......but I never did understand making the backstay a size smaller than the rest of the rig. Of course, we never worried enough to upgrade to a 1/8" backstay either! On a similar note, O'DAY originally rigged the Day Sailers (16'9" LOA) with all 3/32" rigging (2 shrouds, forestay), a few still have that original rigging but most have been upsized to 1/8" after rigging kept breaking. The previous owner of my boat had made this upgrade.
