The Newport to Ensenada race is quite this year. Maybe it is the Economy or the fact the drug lords are running the highways in Mexico.
Anyway, I am racing on a Benneteau 38 this year, a luxury yacht. We leave tomorrow, at 7 am for the 70 mile trip to Newport Beach.
I will be checking messages if anyone else is going,. However, I do not have cell phone coverage in Mexico.
Good Luck all.

None of the guys that I go with or even run into at Ensenada are going
this year. I think it will be a low turnout year for sure. Hope you
guys do well and have a great time. Last year was the first time that
I felt a sort of less than welcome vibe there, so may be something to
that aspect, too.

Hmmm...
I wonder which has the preferred destination, Newport (CA) to Ensenada
or Newport (RI) to Bermuda. Betcha Ensenada is wilder.
Kinda like Beaufort (NC) and Beaufort (SC).

Ensenada is much less of a test although the winners are the usual
suspects. The city was always welcoming but the past few years have
diminished my interest in going. I did something like 23 races from
1971 on but 2007 was the last year I entered and then we had no wind.
There is now an alternate race that does not go below the border and,
I suspect, is a real threat to the Mexican event. A lot of boats use
the race as a feeder for a big regatta in San Diego the following
week. The new race will accomplish that purpose.

Mike, I once did (as crew) a Newport to San Diego race called "The Great
One Night Stand". Can't remember the sponsoring club. It was
incidentally on a Choat 40. Things really went dead after we turned in
for San Diego.

That is a good question. Ensenada is not as big a party place as it use to be, or I have gotten older and don't go looking for the party spots. They don't have a band at the hotel any more and I don't remember a DJ last year. Hardly anybody drives down to meet us so it is a small group at the awards presentation. It will be intresting to see what the Newport to San Diego race does this year.

The challenge in summer racing in southern California is night sailing. If you snooze, you lose. It is almost always very light and, as you well know, a well sailed boat can make enormous gains at night when other crews are less alert.
Unfortunately, they can also turn into drifting matches. I well remember one Ahmanson Series race where my helmsman did not hold high enough coming in to a mark in light air and heavy current. We didn't make it and tacked. Our boat speed was exactly equal to the current and we sat there at right angles to the rhumb line for an hour as boat after boat flashed by. We were about four boat lengths from the mark and there we stayed.
