Hey all - it really depends on the club. I belong to Tuscarora Yacht CLub
in Wilson NY and we do all our own launching and hauling, and the masts come
off every year. When I was out on the west coast with my Cal 29 for 4
years (Alameda CA - estuary) it killed me that i could not check the rigging
with mast down every year, as well as yearly hull checks and drying out. I
did haul after 2 years. Back here now, I appreciate that maintenance
diligence because of that "must haul". Boats are generally more well cared for back
east because of this - just the fact of hauling and drying and perhaps a
little covering saves years on some of these boats. Just my
obsevation.....nothing scientific of course. People out west could not believe mine was a
1970, engine included...

The other thing to consider is how much of a sun effect the boat gets. On the
great lakes I would argue that boats are generally in better overall
condition due to the lack of exposure to intense heat, UV and salt. West
coast boats from the time I spend out their on business and checking marina's
can really get abused from the extreme UV which we don't have. East coast
boats have the salt to deal with.
I don't think the cold which we do have plays as much a factor "if" the boat
is properly prepared. I'm all for the annual haulout and around here is quite
the ritual as you can always see who the nubies are. Makes for good fun and
camaraderie as everyone helps out those who need it.

This gives us middle coast people the chance to evaluate the other
sailors, too. The good folks get busy after haulout and strip the boat
of stuff that suffers from exposure, and arrange a good cover to prevent
weather exposure all winter. The lazy sailors, the ones whose engines
won't start when they're entering the navigation channel or whose
halyards break when they hoist a sail...these are the folks that you
don't really want to go out sailing with. I'm always amazed to see a
boat hauled out and then bimini or dodger are left up, the horseshoe
rings and such are left out, and the halyards are slapping in the
wind. Do these people just have too much money? My former boss has
this nice rafter system built up on his C&C to hold his cover and the
cover itself is taut and windproof. And he's one of those superb
sailors. I try to emulate his example.
