Deconstruction

Hi Chris, I hope your open house went well and had lots of people interested. I went for a enjoyable sail, in spite of the falling light rain. If you want to see sample of the Cal20 construction, take a look at this set of photos... http://homepage.mac.com/tomcharron/PhotoAlbum2.html They are depressing though, my deck core was worse. I agree, George. Having redecked 8 or more CAL 25s, I believe that that is one of the more straightforward jobs. Also made bunches of mast support beams. Did two just two weeks ago. Severe hull damage and a rotted interior I find to be the toughies and reasons for cut-up. I'm just not real good at the interior stuff. By the time I figure out if things were glued or screwed or nailed or tacked or all of the above, I've destroyed all the moldings and all that goes with it. $350 Cal 25 - Parts boat ONLY

george macon2009-05-05 12:26 UTC
THere is a Cal 25 in OHIO for 350 bucks. The keel and hull are hit but it has a mast/boom/older sails/cushions/pulpits/winches and a motor mount. The cradle is okay but I believe it helped to deform the hull so I wouldn't use it. Contact mike shaffer at the attached e-mail. Looks positive. cal content: Silly when folks do this to such good boats. On the other hand the site also has a restoration project boat. Whenever I see pics like this I just start to drool. Love that kind of work....but need to resolve the above issues first. Then there is freedom to play and a place to get to work. Patience is the exercise for the day, week whatever time it takes I guess. It would be really worthwhile if someone could organize a non profit preservation society/charity whatever that takes on such vessels. Its almost impossible to organize this in Canada as our non profit regs have changed significantly post 9/11 which makes this kind of effort almost impossible to put together. I like what Gerry S posted and there are far too many of these being scrapped or given away. From what I understand of US regs a nautical preservation society set up as a non profit has a more realistic potential of being formed. Perhaps Chris C knows more on this subject? -- /ch

Charlie: Did you just say: "Having redecked 8 or more CAL 25s"!!? Egads man, that's amazing. You clearly know the boat inside and out again. Have you any Mk III-34's under your belt?
