Fw: Charter boat

I can't remember if this message from Kurt Ford (CCCCC) has made it to this list yet, but it's a good reminder about how important it is to remain vigilant, especially when on auto-pilot.

How'd you like to be that guy on the bow? And if you listen close, you
can hear someone say what I was actually thinking: "Holy fuck!" :-O

My former partner ran his Uniflite 31 into a freighter at night about
60 miles west of San Diego. They were going albacore fishing and his
son and one boat partner were on watch. They saw the freighter and had
it on radar but the radar was flipped to close range when they thought
it was on long range, plus the freighter was smaller than they
realized. They hit it at 20 knots near the bow and smashed the
Uniflite's bow back to the foredeck hatch. The freighter never even
slowed down. Fortunately, Uniflites are well made and they backed the
boat to San Diego at about 6 knots.
At night, it can be difficult to estimate range. Also, my partner had
a history of being a bit casual about boat safety. He and his wife
were asleep in the vee berth when they hit. Nobody was injured but it
was pretty frightening for a while. He had been involved with boats
since working as a deck hand on fishing boats as a kid but he was
accident prone. A few years later, when he had a gas powered power
boat, it blew up in his face and sent him to a burn unit. He had sold
his interest in the Uniflite because he was annoyed with the boat
partner who had been on watch when they hit the freighter.
He and his son, now also a surgeon, have a big power boat together. I
haven't heard any accident stories so maybe they are more careful, now.
