Cal 20 Spinnaker hardware locations
Chris Gossett2009-05-06 17:08 UTC
Howdy from Texas!
I was wondering if one of my fellow Cal 20 sailors could tell me the
dimensions and location of their Spinnaker track (how far off the deck
is it mounted and how long is it)? I addition, how high off the deck is
the block for the topping lift mounted?
The bottom of my broken mast seems to have walked away and taken the
attached hardware with it.
Thanks in advance for helping me not reinvent the wheel.
And yes I am another Chris with a Cal 20!

We Chrises do have the best taste in boats, don't we?
My Cal 20 has spinnaker gear but it's out in the storage yard under a
cover. If it's not raining tonight, I'll be going out to do some work,
and I'll try to remember to measure then. My spring projects include
varnishing the rudder and tiller, spot-priming and fairing the keel,
adding some bottom paint, and waxing the topsides. The other project is
getting a diver to replace my mooring chain. The winter ice, heavier
than we're accustomed to in recent years, tore off my winter buoy. The
chain was getting a bit worn anyway, so I'm going to just go ahead and
replace it.

I rolled back the cover last night and measured the track. On my boat,
the bottom is 41" above the bottom of the mast's bottom aluminum
casting, and it's 34" long.
I did not notice your inquiry about the topping lift block so I did not
measure that. Maybe this weekend if nobody else replies.

Thanks Chris.
I imagine that as long as the topping lift block is around halfway
between the center of the spinnaker track top and the halyard block that
it should do its job. Having said that if you do get back out there it
would be nice to know for sure.
Thanks again for your help!

I just tried to find a photo on my computer (no luck) but I wonder if
the block is attached at the lower end of the diamond stays. I can't
remember offhand what kind of attachment point it uses there--tangs or
what--but maybe there's a cast fitting there that the block is secured on?
