I saw the Hall a shuss pinkish clouds gather covering the sky to the West and I was 80+ miles from Santa Barbara, on the roof of a house in West Los Angeles. We had nasty gusts of winds whipping around in the late afternoon, real 'devil winds' of the Santanas we usually experiance in the Fall. I understand other fire are broke out near Los Angeles.
One nasty gust nearly ripped a 4'X5" piece of glass out of my hands, that I and me crew were reinstalling on a hot water solar panel.
These hot and dry conditions usually continue for a few days, followed by damp foggy weather that should tamp things down, hopefully before totall destruction occurs. I heard about the fires in S.B. yesterday, so when I saw the pink clouds this afternoon I had guessed Malibu/Santa Monica mountains to the West, had caught fire...again!

form?
Two starting points to be determined as to when the property
moves. Either
Maine where the boat is or Lake Ontario after having it
brought home overland
(2 days vs 4 weeks at basically the same cost). In
either case the boat will
have to be prepared and outfitted. I would
rather do this in home waters as I
know the layout of the landscape so to
speak but if it gets late it is
possible to complete the work in Maine and
start from their. The drawback is
it an unknown in terms of available
services, rates etc. Its basically a
logistics and schedule exercise at
this point where the milestone is
unloading the homestead.
If
Maine then down the coast to Cape Cod into NYC via the Cape Cod Canal and
the inside of Long Island on to New Jersey and down to Norfolk, explore
the
Chesapeake and then finally into the ICW. Exit in Miami and on to
Marathon.
Cross over to Cuba and hang out, Cross back to Mexico down to
Belize and into
Guatemala into Rio Dulce. End of season one.
If
Lake Ontario then the only difference is cross the lake into Oswego NY and
down the NY Canal system into the Hudson to NYC. From their the route is
the
same.
That was the original plan for season one.
The
change that I will probably make is from Marathon onwards. Instead of
heading S in season one, will propably head N along the Florida coast to
the
pan handle along the coastline ending up most likely in Corpus Christi
at
this point. So time of year becomes increasingly important on the last
stretch as the distance is actually longer then the original plan and to
some
degree counter the main current in the region. I still have a lot of
studying
to do as this was not at all planned and the area is totally
foreign to me.
The rest has been reviewed in sufficient detail to be
comfortable with.
We will see. First I need to reach the next
milestone mark. That's the
priority right now. Estimated departure is date
Sept. That gives me 6-8 month
to make it to Corpus or alternates on route
provided I make Miami before or
by December.
The Sept to Dec Lake
Ontario to Miami route is and annual "CDN snow bird"
pilgrimage. This
route is well documented as several hundred vessels make
this run
annually. See graphic attached.
Best regards

I and "AirTime" are ok and are pretty far east of the fire, David Owen and
"Mariposa" are so far ok as well but he is in more danger as his house is a
few blocks away from the Mission.
As I viewed the fire earlier in the day I would SWEAR it was all but out,
then early afternoon the winds kicked up and all hell broke lose! Amazing
and shocking!
The boys have another tough day ahead of them as the winds at my house
right now 8:18 am are gusting to 20 mph
I have been sailboat racing in Santa Barbara for 12 years or so now, and
last night was the first time they have abandoned a "Wet Wednesday" race.

Dan,
Channel Islnads was all confused. I got to the boat and we had no wind, you could see the smoke heading out to sea. I was listening to KTYD and they said the wind picked up and started howling with 40 mph gusts. You could see the smoke turning towards us and we started to get some wind. You know my crew, if they can't have a glass of wine when they sail they stay at the dock. So I jumed on a J105 and headed to the start.
We had a decent on-shore breeze and the seas and must of been 8-12 with flat faces. The waves just rolled over the breakwater wall creating a cream colored foam about 2 ft deep in the starting area. The wind at Platform Gina was 30 knts and Anacapa was 50. We only saw about 10-15 at the start. Now the sun was coming thru the smoke and it gave the world that eerie reddish glommy feel.
When the gun went off the wind died and we just bobbed at the start line with these huge waves rolling in. The smoke was moving off-shore looking like a big smokey snake moving across the sky. Our wind was moving around in a circle. You couldn't get the boat moving in direction fast enough before the change.
2 boats made it out of the harbor and they were swallowed by the size of the waves. We watched the tips of their masts as they had wind and were on their ears, while we wallowed back and fourth trying to get around the wall. The wind was light and shifting around and around.
We got picked up by a wave and carried in towards the beach and decided to throw in the towel before we ended up on the beach. We headed back in and everyone followed us.
After we got back in the harbor we watched as the 2 boats turned around. We waited for the SC 50 to come in, they came in the south entrance and the waves were huge. They got picked up by a wave and surfed into the harbor. It was really cool amongst all the caios.
When we got into the turning basin it started to blow hard. Then it died by the time we got to the dock.
Wierd night.
glad you are all ok.

It's totally crazy, now this fire is headed our way - towards Goleta... It is about to join on its western edge the eastern edge of Gap fire area burned last year in July...
The evacuation center half a mile from my place is full, it seems they are now sending folks over to UCSB campus...

Wow, good luck to all out there.
As I mentioned earlier, the ice moved in this spring and piled up within
10' of my little summer cottage on Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay. In 1946,
the ice had knocked the place down. At that time, my parents were
living in North Carolina and they saw pictures of the bay shore ice
damage on a newsreel in a theater. They asked themselves "why would
anybody live in a place like that?" Within 8 years, they had bought the
little place that had been flattened by the ice. My relatives in the
south asked the same question when my mother showed them photos of this
spring's ice movement--"why would you live in a place like that?" So
when I see the pictures of fire in CA, I resist the temptation to ask
that question.
