Cal 39 vs 40 Round 1
pw… [at] aol.com2009-05-14 18:52 UTC
In an 18 mile round the buoys race last Sunday with 2 reaching legs, 2 upwind and 2 downwind legs we were beaten by the Cal 40 by 6 minutes and we are both rated at 120 by PHRF of the Chesapeake Bay.? Wind was 10-15 with higher gusts.? The Cal 40 has been meticulously maintained, was fully crewed with 7 on board, new Kevlar sales, a new carbon fibre mast, working instruments and skippered by an excellent sailor?who grew up racing in Oxford, MD (where we were racing) and has owned the boat 3 or 4 years.?
We on the other hand, had 4 people on board, one of whom was my wife, and a guest skipper age 70.?I mention that only because of the strength factor required to sail a boat this big in those winds (she was grinding on the genny), not because of their skill level.? Our boat was splashed for the first time at the end of June in '08?and we raced the boat casually last year starting in late July and my wife may have been on board 2-3 times as she had just given birth to our son on July 3rd.? The guest skipper had never been on board to even look at the boat, much less sail it.?? We had a brand new, Dacron main and an old (age unknown) Dacron 150,? an old, once repaired spinnaker and?non functioning instruments for the most part.? We just started racing in '03 and have raced in Oxford 10-12 times a year for the last 5 years.
I guess we impressed some people as one guy asked me if that was a "real" Cal 39.? Not sure what he meant by that but I took it as a compliment.
I'd say if PHRF gave us a handicap for all our disadvantages we'd have won that race ;-).?
BTW, the Cal 40 won the entire fleet, correcting over a well sailed X-yacht so we didn't lose to just anyone.

What was the name of the Cal 40 ? Aurora was a very well maintained 40
that was sold about three years ago. It was in the Annapolis area.

Yup, Belle Aurora was the one.?
Oxford has a few Cals over there. There is?an older Cal 33 "Big Time" who wins a lot?but looks as if it survived a landing in Normandy.? A Cal 36, "Good Cheer" who does well when the wind pipes up.? Then there are 2 more Cal 40's, "Sapphire",?and "Nicole",?both with wheel steering.? Nicole is also?meticulously maintained, I think the owner owns a boat yard and races mostly in St. Michaels now.? A few years ago there is a Cal 27 (I think) named "Freestyle" that used to be practically unbeatable but I've not seen it in a while.

Belle Aurore was beautiful and had carbon sails three years ago but I
hadn't heard about the carbon mast. That seems a waste on a Cal 40.
When Roger Jones and I went back for the GOB regatta, he wanted to
look at it with the idea of buying it. He learned it had just been
sold. It is listed as owned by Don Handy but I don't know if that is
current.

Wow !!!
A carbon fiber mast and they still get a rating of just 120 !!!
Our "stock" rating for LA Harbor is 111. I our area, if we'd gone to a carbon fiber mast, they'd probably put us down somewhere in the 105 rating-area.
