Well, an interesting trip so far. We left BSH haven on Sunday afternoon. Sailed Pensacola bay under genoa only as a shakedow. met briefly with Mike sailing Celtic Naut single handed. He just could not resist taking her out for a Sunday sail! East in the ICW to anchor for the night just east of Sabine point. Monday was a nice day of some sailing and some motoring to Joe's Bayou at Destin. Good anchorage for protection in all but N winds Tuesday AM weather forecasts told of dying winds throughout the day but building to the Se in the next few days. Our goal? Tarpon Springs. So, off we go! Late evening, a storm catches us miles away from shore, and hangs around for about 16 hours with gale force and better winds and building to breaking seas. As it died, we were left with winds on the nose for our destination. Thus, when not becalmed, we spent mid day Wednesday to Friday evening tacking. Along the way, middle of the night wednesday night, we lost steering at the wheel on barbara's watch. So, dig out the emergency tiller and install. It points aft. boy, will that screw up your sailing! Mid morning Thursday I was able to repair the steering system and away we went again. on our way in to Anclote Key, about 12 nm out, we spied what looked like something distressed colored. We turned away from our course to investigate. It turned out to be a deployed 4-6 man life raft! no bodies. we reported it to the Coast Guard, and they said put it back. It was theirs! they were conducting an exercise! docked at Tarpon Springs Municipal Marina. Rates have gone up to $1.50 per foot now. evening thunder storms. Waiting for a weather window to head to Carabelle and back along the ICW to Pensacola. any advice for a 40 yr old sailboat with 48.5 ft clearance and 5.5 ft draft for our return trip will be appreciated! steering cable was apparently too loose. It jumped one of the guide rollers and bound up between the sheave and the frame. that created more looseness and the cables dropped off the steering quadrant. I was able to work the cable back out of its bind, get it to run where it was supposed to, and remove the slack. It will probably need adjusting , but is functional now if not aimed perfectly. by the way, doing it at sea is not as fun as at a dock. Reminder to all: inspect steering!
