Recommendations for Motor Replacement in Cal 28-2 (1986)
acostavientos2009-05-22 18:23
I own for two years "Water Lily", a Cal 28-2 from 1986. The Westernbeke motor that came with it (2 cilinders, 13 hp) has given us nothing but problems. I know you would think that this is the standard experience for sailors and boaters. I mean, motors does get stuck frequenly. Specially when you need them must (murphy's).
But when I said, nothing but problems I really mean it. I'm not jeopeardizing the brand; problably my experience is more related to the previous level of proper maintenance or critical experiences. Something I don't have control off, neither information.
Anyways, my question is... if this were your situation and you were looking preferably for a used motor in good condition, what brand you were looking for, of what specifications and why? There's a motor out there that will fit better than the other (besides Westerbeke)?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Well I have been very happy with my electric motor for my CAL 34. Both cheaper and lighter than the Atomic four it replaced (and yes I am factoring in the battery factor as well) While not for everyone electric propulsion makes a lot of sense for those of us that don't feel the need to make long passages under power...
You might want to check out Electric Yacht (http://www.electricyacht.com) as they seem to have the most experience with CAL's!

Jose:
You might hear this more than once around here, but contact Joe DeMers at Sound Marine Diesel LLC: www.soundmarinediesel.com.
While I have yet to but product from him, he has been immensely helpful and responsive as I sort through my own engine issues.
He provided some comprehensive info on a replacement for my 34. I've stopped shopping and know what I will buy when the time comes.
I'd be a wee bit concerned about a used motor. I'd never go through the agony of removing one unless it was used up.
Good luck,
Dan

My only word to you would be...Yanmar. You just cannot beat a two cylinder Yanmar and it should fit with minimal modifications. I have fought with the Westerbeke and Buhk engines and now have the smooth feel of Yanmar in my engine room.
Good luck with your refit.
Patrick
