Kevin, if for the same reason you do decide to move. Move our way. It is a easy shot to Oxnard, our weather always brings a thrill to sailors near and far, we have the beautiful Channel islands as our play ground and you have plenty of CALs to mingle with.
Our Harbor is running 50 percent available right now and they just approved another 200 slips.

Thanks for the invitation!
I have a friend from LV that has his C&C36 there and we sailed to Cat Harbor for the Latts and Atts party last Sept. 12 hour there and 14 back. It was long but fun.
Other friends have boats in San Pedro, Winmington, etc and say it is much better there since they are closer to Avalon.
Like I said, it was fun doing the party on Catalina but I'm not normally looking for a crowd and think I may like the nothern Channel Isls better.
Since I am making the drive from LV, even going all the way to San Deigo is not that much further.
Any thoughts and/or advice is welcome
PS yesterday the lake was 20-25knots with gusts over 35. whoohoo!

hey kevin,
this weekend was great weather and lots of fun out at santa cruz
island..
we stayed at yellow banks the first night and then headed over to
coches till monday.
it was pretty crowded though.. i havnt seen that many boats around
the islands in my short time sailing...
it was however, perfect..
i have made the trip to catalina from channel islands harbor, two
times now.... it is a long haul.. 12 hours is the norm though...
but i have to say, the north west islands are way more fun for me.. a
short 4 hour sail to the yellow banks..
you got everything except moorings and overpriced restaurants..
catalina is two crowded and over developed for my taste...
and they have no good surfing.. just one crappy spot on the south
side that hardly ever breaks properly..
i spent a week on catalina last year, scouting around the whole
island for a job i was working on..
it was cool to learn a lot of the history of the place and see some
of the "secret spots" from the locals..
but all in all, it is what it is...
santa cruz, annacapa and santa rosa islands, seem much more
mysterious and exciting to me..
i could spend many years exploring these places.... heck, they even
have a giant sea cave you can kayak into...
what more could you ask for...
cheers

I am on the cell phone, I can't change subject line.
short and sweet.
After we peeled away from you the ocean smoothed out past Platform Gilda and we were able to pick up the pace a tad. After Chinese Point we could move at 6knts. We pulled into Prisoners around 4 AM. We anchored outside the boats. Maybe 10 boats were there at day light. I don't think we had more than 20 boats over all. Santa Barbra Yacht Club had 30 to 35 boats at Pelicans.
We kayaked, hiked to Pelicans, had apot luck on the beach, played horse shoes, played cribbage, and went boat to boat for fellowship and drinks.
Sunday night we sat up a telescope on the pier and looked at stars.
The CAL 48 Wanui came out. They redid the interior. What a dream machine. they have it set up for double handing. Again beautiful.
Huba Huba was out with their beautiful CAL 34 and had everyone over for snacks and drinks.
The weather was nice. Sundays winds were a little much for the mud bottom. We saw over 20knts and watched boats drag. My boat had a storm sail up to control the rocking, caught wind and pulled out my stern hook. That caused some excitement. Then the rest of the afternoon was pretty much watching other boats loseing hold and trying to reset. The winds were really not that bad, it seems the boats with plows had the hardest times. They would raise the hook and they were full of eel grass. Their was some long beards out their.
I aslo ran into a couple I had met when I went sailing in Greece. They have returned from a half circumnavigation as they put it. They plan to complete the rest in afew years and do the Pacific rim this time.
What happemed on the back side?

Kevin,
If I made one trip up to the Channel Islands this summer....maybe before the Channel Islands to Marina del Rey Race, where should I go? Where is that big sea cave I've heard about...which island. I do have the Channel Islands cruising guide by the wiley UCSB Anthro Proffessor/x- solar customer of mine, may he rest in peace....somewhere in my apt.

Just got back from Catalina myself. I keep my boat in San Pedro. After having it in Huntington Harbor for many years... I much prefer San Pedro now. 3 hours and 45 minutes channel crossing is my fastest time across. Going in to Two Harbors I can generally get a front row spot on the rope line... since the limit is 25', my Cal 25 fits just right! San Pedro is fun if you like some heavy wind... as soon as you reach the harbor enterance you're usually hit by knock down strength air. A little taste of heavy weather sailing, always catches the newbie guests by surprise!

i hit the yellow banks at around 3am.. dropped a single hook on the
outside of what literally looked like a floating city of about 50
boats, or more..
we got up and motored over to coches. i was lucky and scored a nice
spot right on the inside next to four other boats.. of course its bow
stern only.. and saturday was beautiful...
but we also got some wind on sunday.. it was so odd for us though, it
seemed to wrap around and change directions about every hour..
we had great shelter in the cove and it only felt like maybe 8 knots
or so.. a bit harder on the outside.. i could see the wind line..
it was white caps starting around .5 miles out...
but that only seemed to last for a few hours in the afternoon.. by
sunset it was calm..
left on monday morning hoping to get some surf in at mar meadows, but
too small to stop and bother..
so we stopped and checked out the kelp forrest outside sandstone
point.. we saw 6 separate commercial dive boats in the area.. busy
day for the fish...
it was a slow breeze going back, so we motor sailed around 7 knots
all the way in.. we got back into channel islands harbor that
afternoon around 2pm..
its gonna be a good summer..
cheers

Is that the 48 that was bought at auction from OC College sailing
school ? It had been donated and I heard it had been completely
restored before it was donated. I heard the sale price (auction bid)
was about $65,000. I looked at a 48 in Ensenada about 12 years ago and
was tempted although in many ways the 43 is a better layout. The
biggest problem is the task of finding a slip unless you have one in
front of your house. I have also been told by people who did long
cruises on them that they are wet due to low freeboard. Both the 48
and the 43 are beautiful boats.
We spent the weekend at Howland's Landing at Catalina and had the
pleasure of seeing Melee, finally finished by the owner and sailing,
come over. Melee sat for years with no mast and no engine or deck
hardware. It's been finished by the owner in the past year and looks
great. We had Radiant, Callisto, Psyche, Melee and Conquest all at
the island. We had a bit of excitement as we had to tie between moored
boats and the boat in front of us was a Cal 2-46 with dinghy davits on
the stern. They managed to smash my bow light as we eased up trying to
pass a line.
Then, about 1:30 Sunday night, the stern line parted after it got
under the can behind us and chafed through on the chain. I woke up
with us swinging into another boat and we spent a half hour getting re-
tied. It's really easier to anchor although the water is deep.
