So, re: Oregon's safest harbor, How high do the waves break?
We used to have a guy in this group (in the Sailnet days of yore) sailing his Cal 24 Oldie out of San Luis Obispo out into the Pacific, single handing out to sea up to the North off "Frisco", and zipping around California's Cape Horn in a 45 knot blow, who would take refuge from storms by hiding in the lee of that first little treacherous Channel Islands Island, ducking into the kelp along with the friendly Sea Otters.
He used to be a fisherman. his remedy for the Cal 24's ample sized cockpit and tiny drains was to rig a spray apron around himself like an Inuit Kayaker.
He had to single-hand. Everyone, including his wife, was too terrified to go out sailing with him.

I thought of sailing my Cal 29 up from the
San Francisco Bay . I would have to come in at Bandon
or the Coquille River . No thank you it has breaking
waves all the way across both places on a normal day. I don’t know how the
fisherman do it. I hear Newport
is also a good place. Let me know how it plays out. When do you think you will
make the trip?

I'm in Brookings. They say it's the safest bar on
the Oregon
coast. Ha ha, of course safe is a relative term when you're talking
about harbors on the Oregon
coast. It is a very nice little port though.

Where in Oregon do you want to
sail? I am in Coquille. That is by Bandon. The entries past the break waters
are really rough out here. I’ve had to leave my Cal 29 in Berkeley , Ca for now.

Jerry,
I met him at the little vintage boat Marina in Morrow Bay one day
while out with the wife. I knew who he was immediately when I saw him
puttering on his Lapworth -- from his posts on the Cal List. What an
amazing and interesting sailor he was. Don't I recall that he took
the keel off of that boat on purpose? I think so. What an iron
character and a really fun guy to yarn with.
I've forgotten his name.

Hi Gerald,
The wave break depends on what's going on outside. A lot of times it's very mello but in the winter we get strong southwest winds that shoot right in the river entrance and they are not nice. Also, we have a problem with sneaker waves that will come out of no where and whack you. Oregon is an amazing place to live though. :)

The potato patch shoals leaving the SF Bay also is interesting when
ebbing, wind from the southwest and large rollers from the northwest.
While racing the MORA series in the 70's, the Coast Guard "closed" the
ocean for a couple weeks while a large storm cell moved through and
churned up everything . The next weekend we raced and the potato patch
was like sailing in a washing maching, a true test for the scuppers in
the cockpit and the stomach...... The Coast Guard still responded to
several boats and brought them back, downed rigs and broken rudder.....
