David, He took the centerboard out of the keel (the keel is an integral part of the Cal24, with molded in lead) and put a lead shoe in instead that drew maybe a foot or less of additional draft, which gave him about the same amount of ballast and maybe even just as much bite as the feeble 1/8 of a pie section that the standard centerboard does. The Harbor at Moro bay is very shallow, and he, like I, found the existing CB very inefficient. Maybe I got his name somewhere in my files, but have me doubts. I wonder if he's with us, or Old Neptune's got him? I knew who he was immediately when I saw him puttering on his Lapworth -- from his posts on the Cal List. What an amazing and interesting sailor he was. Don't I recall that he took the keel off of that boat on purpose? I think so. What an iron character and a really fun guy to yarn with.I've forgotten his name. He used to be a fisherman. his remedy for the Cal 24's ample sized cockpit and tiny drains was to rig a spray apron around himself like an Inuit Kayaker. He had to single-hand. Wheelpilot Installation opinions

Gang, This is one of the reasons that I bought the Simrad the last time around..... I don't know where to mount the course computer and fluxgate compass. I mean I have some ideas but thought I'd ask if any of you had already been down this road and had an problems or solutions to report. Where did you mount the fluxgate compass and how did it work out? Where did you mount the course computer box and how did that work out? What Cal boat are we talking about? I have a 29. Thanks in advance, David "sad to see my Simrad go since it still works" Owen

David, I installed a Ray Marine AP in my Cal 29 and have had no problems with it in the three years I've had it. I installed the heading sensor in the storage compartment under the fwd dinette seat. It's mounted on the aft bulkhead as far to the stbd. as possible. This puts the sensor close to being over the keel. It's near the waterline and close to center of the boat. The draw back is that it's close to the steel beam. After completing the sea trial calibration the compass matches my binnacle compass within three degrees. The only problem I had is when I set my tool box on the floor under the dinette table while transiting from one marina to another. It caused the pilot to be very sluggish. So you do need to be carful not to store large metal objects in that storage area. I mounted the course computer in the cabin on the stbd. side of the cabin steps. It covers a hole where there once was an electrical panel. You need to be able access this to wire it up, but once installation is complete, you shouldn't have to access it. I hope this helps. Good luck with your installation. Wilkie, On the Flying Tiger we mounted the compass in the Vee birth and the computer in the Nav station. George, Thanks so much for your report. I was hoping that would work for the compass and now that I think more about the beam I realize that mine was replaced with stainless and should be non-magnetic.... I think. Is that right? I guess some signage NOT to put cook pots, dive gear, knives, assault guns (just kidding) and the like in that storage bin alongside the compass. I was thinking I'd put the brain on the aft bulkhead at the foot of the starboard quarterberth -- do you think that would work or does it need to be near the centerline. I also have a blank wall outside the engine room where an electrical panel used to be that I could use if it was better.... Hi David, Having a stainless beam is even better! It wont affect the compass. My unit came with a decal to put on the storage compartment as a reminder not to store metal objects there. As for the controller, I think the only requirement is that it stays dry, and that the wires from the sensors will reach it. I think either of the two location you mentioned will work.
