Out Patient, 3rd and 5th for the weekend
Randy Alcorn2009-06-02 02:20 UTC
On Saturday May 30th, was Anacapa Yacht Clubs first race of a 3 race series, "Anacapa to Port", a 30 mile course which takes you across the Santa Barbra Channel around the back side of Anacapa Island and back to Channel Islands Harbor.
"Out Patient" was entered into the non-spin class with 7 other boats and we sailed double handed. Forcasts were mixed, one said winds less than 10 and the other said 22 plus. With the 2 of us on the boat and little experience with my single crew mate we took a conservative approach. The winds were around 12 knts at the start. I hung the number 2 and stayed back at the start with the intent of passing who I could and catching the rest. That is exactly what we did, we passed the Ensign Peirson, "Red Wing"; CAL 25, "Zuma Jay"; the Catalina; 27, "SISU"; the boat "Sail A Vee"; a Hunter 35, "1421"; leaving the Catalina 35, "r Escape" as our next challange. However once we got on the back side of the island all we could do was try to maintain 3 knts at times in the lighter air. That gave Zuma Jay and Sisu everything they needed to close the gap on me. Even little "Red Wing" (270 rater) started to materialize in the distance. "1421" zig and zaged with her
fractional rig until she finally sailed into a hole and we passed her again. As we rounded the Lighthouse the winds picked up and "1421" made it inside of us pulled out in front and stayed there. The water was flat as asphault and we were moving my little CAL 29 at 8.8, 8.9 and even hit a 9.0 once, I kept looking at the GPS saying it was catching up or something but the numbers stayed solid. Wasn't long before we started to reach chop then waves pulled us down to 6.9 and 6.7 for the rest of the way home. We stayed with the Hunter and the Catalina all the way back to the finish, however, I couldn't shake "SISU" she stayed about a 1/2 mile behind us. Or as the skipper told me later, he was sticking to me like a barnicle on my ass. He did too. At the awards ceremony, it ended with CAL 25, "Zuma Jay" 1st, Catalina 27, "SISU" 2nd and "Out Patient", 3rd.
Sunday was Ventura Yacht Clubs, Commodores Classic, all boats are to be sailed by Commodorers, Staff Commodores or Rear Commodores. Jerry Roth asked to sail "Out Patient" in the race. We sailed against 23 boats for the start. It was everything from a Jenneau 52 down to a Catalina 27. As long as they were not a race boat, ie, Olson 30, J 105 , Santa 35 and such. We saw a lot of classic plastic and some nice looking new cruisers, you got more points for being a cruiser, dodger= points, 100 ft of chain in the bow=points, fixed blade props and roller furlings even gave you extra points. Even little "Out Patient" my CAL 2-29 ended up with 16 points for the non spin off set giving her a rating of 196. The race comitittee sets us off on a 13 mile course. No one but Jerry and I on the boat. So at the start Jerry puts "Out Patient" in perfect starting position, then all of a sudden it gets dark, The Jenneau 52 comes up from behind us, the Jenneau 44
right next to him, we keep our inside line and we squeeze over the top of a Catalina 27 after the horn goes off we are 3rd boat into the fresh air and off we go, We sail until it was obvious we were not going to sail over the 52 and decide to tack away. We stayed 3rd boat in the fleet, up the windward leg. After we rounded the mark we stayed with the 52 on the down wind leg to the second mark, now a couple of other boats went by on the inside and that put us fifth boat in the fleet. The Benneteau 38, "Fusse", the Irwin 35, "Zoarces", the Benneteau 36, Jenneau 52 and a Santana 30 beat us to the second mark. "Out Patient" is sailing good for old sails and being double handed. We round the 3rd mark and we only were passed by the Jenneau 44 and a Catalina 35. All is going good, the winds finish us just ahead of the Jeanneau 44. The results are the Irwin 35, 1st; Benne 36, 2nd; Benne 38, 3rd; Catilina 35, 4th and Out Patent, 5th. We lost 3rd by 30 seconds.
I can only think, If only I had one other person to help me bring in that 155 on the upwind legs. Hummmmm?
