Timm, Great Video. I was watching the other CAL, it was on it's ear. was she carying way to much sail for the winds. She looked like she was locked down and dragging all her hardware. Cal Gal and Madrugador have the same rating. (129) Respectably we took third, besting the two other Cal 40's (Madrugador & Spectre). We were beaten by a Yamaha 36 (37 minutes) and a C&C 35 (7 minutes..) A nice portion of the video is our Madrugador Match Race. On the way out to the windward mark we traded @ 50 tacks in our duel up the coast against 2-3 knots of current in 25 knots of wind, trading crossings all the way up. The long run home was a gybing duel. Cal Gal was able to pull away and finally finish @ 20 minutes ahead... dEmO

I race an L-36, the boat Lapworth built previous to the Cal-40 and similar in some ways although in no way up to the standards of a Cal-40. I consistently come in 2nd to a very good sailor. I spend a lot of time talking to him after to find out what he does. This last race, we had gail force gusts forecast although it was only blowing about 12 at the start. It didn't hit 35 that day but it did blow hard. There are no spinnakers in our class so there is no easy way to change sails. He started with a 155 jib and I started with a 130. He always sails with the 155. He just lets his main out, puts a big bubble in it and lets is flog gently. It isn't pretty but he sure out points me. He also puts 6 on the rail with their feet over the side. I also put a bubble in my main although I don't let it flog too much. We both have two full batons which helps a great deal. At one point in the last race I had the main trimmer sheet the main in like any sailing book would tell you to do and we just started going sideways. Letting the main out improved out pointing considerably. Like my fast friend says, it is't pretty but it works. Just thought I would share this with you all in case you want to try something completely different. PS. I am trying to figure out why he out points me and I think I have identified several things that I need to fix. you should have been there.. ! the other 40 took a flyer to the Washington Coast and rounded an hour before us, the faster boats in our fleet went to the Canadian shore... I should have covered the 40, but stayed in the middle looking for current push out. Cal Gal was looking for an overall first... we ended up catching the 40 on the downwind leg and put another 20 minutes on them by the time we got to the finish. We were very light on that race. I think that made the downwind difference. dEmO From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Harleigh Ewell Sent: Wednesday, June 03, 2009 8:45 PM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Swiftsure Video - Cal 40 Duel That was a fun video dEmO! --- On Mon, 6/1/09, Michael Kennedy <mt… [at] cox.net<mailto:mtkennedy1%40cox.net>> wrote: > From: Michael Kennedy <mt… [at] cox.net<mailto:mtkennedy1%40cox.net>> > Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Swiftsure Video - Cal 40 Duel > To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com<mailto:Cal_Boats%40yahoogroups.com> > Date: Monday, June 1, 2009, 11:16 AM > I looked at another of the videos > from the Swiftsure and there is a > boat that looks like one of Huey Long's Ondines there. enjoy the video! seems hard to believe that your competetion, sailing on their ear a lot with a full main bubbling would b e faster that way than with a single reef in the main and standing more upright. I believe at that point we did have a single reef and our #3 up. THe wind was varying between 2 knots and 28 knots, I know we did 5 headsail changes: Inside hoist Tack inside peal We were better at, and did more sail changes than the other 40, who had lost a halyard in an early headsail change.
