Dear Paul West,
8 June - 2300
24 boats have now finished. All of IRC I and PHRF I are in. IRC I has
been won by George David’s 90’ maxi, Rambler. She is followed by Michael
Brennan’s Sjambok, a Reichel Pugh 45, and then SirenSong, Tom Carroll’s
J/133. In PHRF I the class winner is Donnybrook, Jim Muldoon’s custom 72
footer beating the USNA entry Tomcat, a Farr 53 skippered by MIDN Josh
Hinshaw.
The first 5 boats in IRC II and the first 8 in PHRF II have finished, but
it is not clear that they will save their time on boats in their class that
are now approaching the finish. In their favor is the normal weakening
as evening falls of the southerly they enjoyed during the day today. There
are interesting stories developing. Will Henry Morgan, the 85 year old
skipper of Dolphin, who won his class and fleet in 2007, be able to save
enough on the boats in his class that have already finished? The double-handed
entry, Nasty Medicine, sailed by Stephen Sherwin and his son have
finished right with similarly rated fully crewed boats. Another double-hander,
Paladin, has had a tight battle all race long with a fully crewed
sistership. Looks like Jim Mumper’s Diamond in the Rough, a venerable Cal 36 and
rated the slowest boat in the fleet, has a chance to save her time on the rest
of PHRF III.
