Cal 2-30 headroom
Antonio Garcia2009-06-10 23:33 UTC
Hello,
I'm considering making an offer on a Cal 2-30 listed at a good price in LA.
I've already got a Contessa 26 as a bluewater boat, and was looking at the
Cal as a liveaboard and coastal cruiser (the Contessa is coffin-like
inside).
I was attracted by the spacious galley and generally sensible interior
layout.
Anyone know what the headroom is like on these boats though? I'm 6'1", and
while I don't mind stooping, I wouldn't want to be in a perpetual hunch.
Thanks, Antonio.

There's definitely more standing headroom belowdeck in the Cal than in the Contessa, though not having ready access to a Cal 2-30 to provide real scientific measurements, I couldn't say with certainty how much more standing headroom there is.
Still, you should definately get that Cal, and then give me your Contessa. I promise I'll take good care of her!

I think the Cal 2-30 should have around 6' to 6' 1" in places in the
main salon -- on the presumption that it is the same basic design as
the 29 plus a reverse transom. The interiors and cabin trunk appear
to be the same.

Wilkie,
Thanks for the info. That should just about work.
@Gerald: Yeah, the guy was Brian Caldwell, and he did it in a Canadian-built
Contessa. First woman to solo circumnavigate also did it in a Contessa
(Tania Aebi, author of 'Maiden Voyage').
As we speak, another guy has set off in (approximately) a circumnavigation
with a Contessa: http://www.bigoceans.com/
He just left Half Moon Bay Hawaii-bound.
Thanks all for the info, A.

Will try to get down to mine and take an actual measurement this week, but 6'0"-6'1" sounds about right. I'm only 5'8", so I rarely notice. Besides the interior, the cockpit is very roomy for after sail activities with the tiller up and out of the way. She also goes to weather like a witch and has a very generous PHRF (186 in lower Chesapeake). If you have any questions, I'll try to answer.

Yes, the CAL 2-30 "Checkmate" out of Annapolis does very well on her
rating. Not to mention good skippering. Kicks butt in the Good Old
Boat Regatta. Her owners, Bob and Cyndi Gibson, are kind enough to host
our social events, boat rafting, and music fests on Mill Creek off
Whitehall Bay outside of Annapolis.
Cheers
Charlie
