Cal 28 on the grid

Hi all, Just joined and wanted to share some pics -- I have a blogspot here <http://cal28vi.blogspot.com/> if you want to check it out on the tidal grid... My question is whether I should keep looking for a hull I.D. number -- I can't find one, and maybe it doesn't have one. I have not seen another boat like this with a hole in the transom rather than the bottom of the lazarette for an outboard. Mine has a large rectangular hole, suitably reinforced, for the outboard to hang out the back of the boat. In my limited research, I have discovered that some of the Cals were build in Vancouver, Canada for a short time by a company which eventually build the "Crown" make. Maybe this is a modification they made? Anyway, I will run the boat like this for a while, but my gut says to close up the giant hole in the transom and put the outboard on a bracket. Cheers, Todd

She is absolutely gorgeous! My Cal 20 wants to be a Cal 28 when she grows up! I, too, just bought a Cal 28 about a month ago.The hole in the transom, for an outboard, is barely big enough for my 6hp Johnson. It is sometimes a pain putting it in and out, but I've heard that it is very hard to deal with having one on the back of the transom. If you get a larger motor to fit the hole, please let us know. I would love to have a more powerful motor, but this is the only one I know that fits. I have to install both AC and DC power in mine (I'm still not sure how). If you have to do the same, let me know. Best of Luck Mark McBride Williamsburg,Va

Mark, I have a 9.9 Johnson Sailmaster in the transom hole, but the previous owner had to cut away part of the engine cover to leave room for it to tilt (!). I am just finishing some engine maintenance, but when I get the engine back on, I will see how it works. One of the other disadvantages is that the swing of the motor is extremely limited for dockside manoeuvering. I am pretty sure I will fabricate an aluminum "plug" for the transom hole, and mount a kicker bracket to this. Some kind of a block will help to raise and lower the motor. I am not looking to install AC power, as I will probably end up keeping the boat on a mooring buoy, and pulling it for the winter to sit in my yard. If I visit a marina, I have a portable receptacle with the 30A plug end I can use for a battery charger, heater, etc. I am still sorting out the existing 12v electrical, but it looks mostly original with few of the "creative" additions often seen in old boats. I will eventually install a couple of solar panels on a stainless "radar arch" (with no radar yet) at the stern to help keep the batteries charged, but other than that, I am keeping it very simple with regard to the electrics: hand pump at the sink, LED lighting, cig. lighter plugs for the GPS/etc, and maybe a tiller pilot next year.
