SS Stern Rail Welding
Michael D2009-06-19 16:27 UTC
Ahoy,
Magic's stern rail snapped off where the forward starboard support was welded to the base plate. Anyone here with SS welding experience? Rather than hiring a welder, I'm considering renting a unit and doing the job myself. I did a bit of welding years ago, but never any SS. Recommendations, suggestions, stories?
Thanks,
--Mcihael--

I would bet I could get it welded for less than the cost of renting but then
again I know a welder who loves doing small projects and doesn't charge
much. Where are you located?

Hello Allen,
I'm in Pt. Richmond and may need a small job welded. Like to have your referral.

The place I use is not very close to you but was highly recommended to
me and I would highly recommend him. The welding I had him do was on
aluminum and one was an old casting which are very difficult to weld.
I can weld myself and know a good weld when I see one. His welds are
great. I also had him weld up an aluminum bicycle frame and that came
out great as well.

Michael,
The best way to weld stainless is with a TIG welder with an Argon gas
shield. It can be done with a stick welder, in DC with straight
polarity, and the right rods (ER308 if I recall), but is generally
not a pretty weld and takes some practice to make it even 'look'
alright, let alone be a strong weld that you may need to depend
on.... stick is basically a last resort for stainless. TIG is by far
the best way to go. But it does take a fair bit of practice, and a
decent machine to boot.
Also very important, is that any welding done in stainless needs to
be pickled and passivated afterwards, otherwise it will rust and
corrode like crazy and eventually ruin the integrity of the
stainless. Pickling pastes can be found at industrial welding
suppliers, but is truly nasty stuff to have around, and use.... they
don't like to sell it to just anyone.... one of those trade secrets
of a stainless welder.
Cheers
