Dick, The foam luff facilitates partial furling of your headsail when needed. In other words, when you are out there flying the #1 and the winds pick up beyond reason, you can furl it in to, say a #3 size. The foam luff helps keep the shape at the forestay. We have it on our 135 dacron. It works well, but we rarely use it. If the weather pipes up that much, it's probably best to furl the headsail completely. Our boat has roller furling, and I'm getting conflicting opinions about the advisability of having a foam luff. I'd appreciate any advice some of you may have on the matter.
