Cal 40 mast step beam replacement

wheee_dogggie2009-07-10 17:08
First of all, I would like to thank all of you who have helped get me the information that I needed to complete the replacement of the mast step beam on my Cal 40. I now have the new beam in place and bolted in and am in the process of replacing all of the chain plates and associated hardware. For those who have similar beam issues I just wanted to note what I found when replacing. Upon removal, the rust and degradation of the beam far surpassed what the eye could see from the outside. Once tearing into the project I found that, both 5/8" support rods that connect from the upper shroud chain plates down to the beam, were broken or rusted off. One was cracked due to rust right where it penetrated the head counter top and the other had nothing to connect to at the beam. I had also found that the original beam had once been "re-tabbed" on the port bulkhead due to deterioration of the beam. This repair had been done with lesser grade materials and was causing some serious flex in the bulkhead. I have taken lots of photo's of the process and have made a photo folder on this site (Wheee Dogggie Mast Step Replacement). Check it out, you will be amazed at the lack of beam that was left in the belly of the Cal 40. The part of the beam you cannot see in the photo's are the two 5 gallon buckets of rust chips that were removed later. Patrick s/v Wheee Dogggie 1968 Cal 40, #137

That is really something. I am so happy to see that it isn't just wood boats that have these problems. Here is mine before: http://l-36.com/mast_step/mast_step.html and after: http://l-36.com/mast_step/pics.html http://l-36.com/mast_step/mpics.html The entire project is documented here if you are interested: http://l-36.com/mast_step.php Allen On Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 10:08 AM, wheee_dogggie<pf… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > > > First of all, I would like to thank all of you who have helped get me the > information that I needed to complete the replacement of the mast step beam > on my Cal 40. > > I now have the new beam in place and bolted in and am in the process of > replacing all of the chain plates and associated hardware. > > For those who have similar beam issues I just wanted to note what I found > when replacing. Those are good pics. Do you have higher rez copies I could use for the history ? I have some from another project. What material did you use for the new beam, ? The wood is purple heart. It is hard as nails and very clear. Let me know which shots you would like high res shots of. Some of them were taken 1200x1600 with a pocket camera and some 2000x3000 with a consumer grade digital SLR. I am unsure if I should have replied to your post. My pictures are of an L-36 and there are also pictures of the C-40. The L-36 is all wood and there are no shroud tie rods so there is some confusion and I am sorry as I think it was my fault. Mike, I have many hi res photo's of the project. I can send them to you offline. The new beam is made of carbons steel like the old one however I have treated it to prevent corrosion. The pdf print of the replacement beam worked out so good, it fit right in place. Thanks, Patrick >> > Those are good pics. Do you have higher rez copies I could use for >> the >> > history ?
