Re: [Cal_Boats] Annapolis Riggers
Darr -
Mark McAteer of Atlantic Rigging is honest and trustworthy. He trimmed the
corrosion off the bottom of my mast and reinforced the mast step on my Cal
39 and I hope to be in a position to have my standing rigging replace this
winter as I have rod rigging that is 23 years old. I asked him if it was
worth it to go back with rod and he told me it'd be a waste of money and to
invest in low stretch spin halyards etc to get the most bang for my buck. He
passed up a chance for a lot more money telling me that and the work he did
on my mast was first rate. Tell him Paul West referred you.
Where and what kind of damage do you need repaired on the fiberglass? How
soon do you need it done? I did quite a bit of repair on my 39 as you can
see from the photos below (if they will post). I may be able to help you if
you want to contact me off list. If I can't I know someone who can if he is
in town. He emailed me from his boat today as he is cruising the Bay now
and is headed up north soon but I don't know how soon.
Good luck -

I had the bottom power planed by someone else and while sanding what little
paint off that they left, discovered that the PO had either hit something
or the bow was delaminating a little. I ground the glass down about 6 to 8
inches back and then built it back up with successive layers of fiberglass
mat.
You can see here what was left after the power planing. There had been
about 20 years of cruising paint on the bottom that would have taken weeks to
sand off.
I put 4 coats of Pettit epoxy on it for a barrier coat and then 2 coats of
Pettit Vivid. My diver loves it as it cleans very easy.
Fortunately no one says anything about the clash between the white and off
white.
