Great boats, the 34s. My family owned hull #72. Raced well, and cruised well. Just like the 40s. When Dick Deaver was driving his Cal-29 (Swiss Navy) he could barely keep up with me. (That's a joke, complimenting his skills, not mine). Ditch the wheel. Just my opinion, shared by some, not by others. In case anyone did not know, the mention of Dick Deaver (see below) is one of sailing reverence. When I was first introduced to sailing, age 5-6, more or less, Dick was one of the Newport Beach/Balboa CA super-stars. He ran the Long Beach loft for North Sails, crewed to 3rd in the Japan Olympics with Lowell North, he won countless championships in all sorts of boats, and we we sailed 9 consecutive Congressional Cups together, winning twice against some of the world's best match-racers, and never out of the top-3. So when I said that I could barely keep ahead of him in a Cal-34 when he was sailing a Cal-29, that's how good he was. We sailed thousands of miles together, and I learned more from him than from any one else. I was never a great sailor, but he surely made me a better sailor. Fin.
