The O'DAYs (Cruising models) were designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates, most of the designs are credited to John Deknatel, Chief Designer. The Older O'Day 27 was designed by Alan Gurney. CAL and O'DAY were both divisions of Bangor Punta Marine, both having been sold to BP in the mid-1960's along with LUHRS, and ULRICHSON powerboats. This brings to mind that HUNTER was started by (and still managed by?) Warren Luhrs, son of Henry Luhrs who founded LUHRs powerboats. YIKES! Our CALs are distant cousins of those HUNTERS! Gary Mull was designer of most of the RANGER sailboats, RANGER was another Jensen Marine Sailboat line, built in the same factories as our CALs (at least the "East Coast CALs built in New Jersey). The original RANGER was the 26, and originally sold through O'DAY dealers. Gary Mull was also the designer of the SANTANA 22 which was designed as a CAL 20 beater for Schock. As I've said in the past.....the book "Heart of Glass" by Dan Spurr is a GREAT history of fiberglass boatbuilding and reveals the many interrelations of various builders. O'Days and Cals built on same factory floor? Yes, I know that. Does this mean I can invite my most wonderful dock mate friends to our next CCCCCC (date yet to be announced..It's end of July....and I'm biting my fingernails now) who own an O'Day 28? I understand Gary Mull was a disciple of Bill Lapworth's, correct me, didn't he work in his design office for some time? And there was another designer of lighter weight, super fast boats out of San Francisco who I read was then disciple of Gary's ( I can't remember his name, he died a few years back, I recall he was a Christian Scientist, a sect that rejects modern medicine and doctors)..oh yes now I remember now...Carl Schumacher. Three great gurus or kahunas of sailing; I could go so far as breaking another rule worse than discussing politics in a social setting, and bring up religion, I could call them 'Saints of Sail-dom'. This warm and friendly, cheerful couple brings over glasses of wine and cookies to us when we pull in and dock after a race! It can't get any better than that!! Oh, and I might add they previously owned, restored and re-beamed a Cal 25! This case makes my blood boil and I find it sickening... ......however, my e-mail program is blessed with a "DELETE" function and if the ranting and raving gets too bad......well, I just hit the delete! I agree this is "sailing related", but it also makes me nervous about stinkpotters in the same way that years of watching too many police chase TV shows has made me paranoid at every cross street! Let's get back to discussing the joys and challenges of sailing our boats!
