Mike,
I never understood why anyone would take the sheet all the way to the
mast make this big trip hazard then go to the trouble of going below
deck just to bring it back aft to a winch instead of just doing what
you have done. I want to get the sheet to the cabin top so going
along the boom is better. On the other hand, it does introduce forces
that you do not have to worry about with what you have done.

Allen, I note that you are very concerned about forces on the gooseneck.. Do you have a bad experience to relate?

Re: [Cal_Boats] Mainsheet systems (Allen)

My boom was originally set up for roller reefing. At one time the fitting
cracked (from rolling it) and I had it welded. The weld did not hold and
that is the condition it is in now. It is hard to tell from the picture but
the weld is more an issue with rolling it than with the strength as a
gooseneck so I am not totally stupid leaving it the way it is. I have
removed the ability of the thing to roll by replacing the pin with a bolt
and that adds some strength. It may be very strong but it just looks like I
should be careful. It doesn't look as strong as the booms and goosenecks on
newer boats.
See what you think

Re: [Cal_Boats] Mainsheet systems (Allen)
Michael Kennedy2009-07-24 00:38 UTC
That looks like it will accept a German Admirals Cup sheet
arrangement. Conquest had that when I bought her but we changed and
used the two cabin top winches for halyards with stoppers forward of
them. I have six lines come to those two winches and have only the
topping lift winch on the mast. The halyards come to 90 degree turning
blocks at the deck, which is tied down with a tie rod beneath to the
mast step. They then come back to the stoppers. I chose to do this to
simplify winches but could go back to the other system. What I have
now does make a big pile of main sheet aft but the helmsman is forward
of this anyway. Plus, of course, we aren't racing except for an
occasional ceremonial foray.

RE: [Cal_Boats] Mainsheet systems (Allen)
ti… [at] ch2m.com2009-07-24 16:05 UTC
I do not know if it would be any help, but My old boom is sitting in the scrap pile at the Richmond Yacht Club in Point Richmond. It is not stock length, but it may have some redeeming hardware on it... If there was interest, you could talk with Richie there and take a look.
I think there are also at least one of my old 6061-T6 aluminum spinnaker poles, probably two, just sitting there oxidizing. We replaced all the standing rigging in 2003 and got new carbon fiber poles.

My boom was originally set up for roller reefing. At one time the fitting cracked (from rolling it) and I had it welded. The weld did not hold and that is the condition it is in now. It is hard to tell from the picture but the weld is more an issue with rolling it than with the strength as a gooseneck so I am not totally stupid leaving it the way it is. I have removed the ability of the thing to roll by replacing the pin with a bolt and that adds some strength. It may be very strong but it just looks like I should be careful. It doesn't look as strong as the booms and goosenecks on newer boats.

Okay - just talk with Richie... It's in the pile along side his shop. I don't think he'll mind, we gave it to him, and he just keeps it there to steal from... I did not see anything taken off the parts when I looked at them last summer before the 2008 Pacific Cup. They have been sitting there since 2003....
