video of my boat
Chris Campbell2009-08-12 13:00 UTC
I got back from vacation and found that I am famous!!! Cal 20 #1220
appears in a Youtube video. Well, it does for about 2 seconds. Here's
the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZu3XTLtkRM. It's a short
video on the Traverse City Film Festival.
If it works, you will see /Martha C/ at about 1:23. What a pretty
boat! How about that handsome skipper!

Nice sail shapes there. Great looking boat but I messed the part about the
handsome skipper. Maybe that was on a different video ;-)

A truly gorgeous boat. Paused it on the 3rd attempt. The Skipper put
his best face to the camera as near as I can tell. :)

Notice how they always use sailboats to show how nice a place is?
Great shot and nice boat. But, the glare!....

Traverse City is a very nice place, maybe because I can ride my bike
about a mile from home to my boat and be sailing in a few minutes. The
old saying here, reflecting northern lower Michigan's traditionally
diminished pay scale, is "a view of the Bay is half your pay." Many of
us have decided that it's a fair trade.
Our little fleet in the mooring field where my boat sits contains about
35 boats. Only a few are "official" or approved moorings. There was a
rumor that a certain local politician was gunning for the "pirate
moorings" because he did not like to look out from his office and see
all those boats in his way. He was in the other party and is long gone
from public office, thank goodness. To my eye, there is nothing more
attractive than a mooring field of good boats, in all shapes and
colors. A tourist town ought to pay us for making the waterfront area
look so attractive.
And what makes a town look like a nice place better than a nice Cal 20
sailing past?

Chris,
I actually stated that opinion (that boat owners should be paid for what they added to a town's value) in front of the city council of Panama City, FL when they were denying our permit request to add slips to the yacht club in town. Their own official post card promoting the city was shot from the bay across the city marina and into town. I told them that the sailboats in our marina added value to the neighborhood and backed it up by showing every single real estate listing in the neighborhood behind us stated in their property descriptions, "close to yacht club" as an advantage to the property.
Unfortunately, there was a very powerful local attorney who didn't like the docks near his property -- his own boat slip was to the side of his property -- and the town council voted against our application. It was a beautiful bay and a lovely place to sail, but I am glad I don't live there anymore! The favoritism was a bit much to take.
