Rigging tension for a Cal 33-2...

cal33peregrine2009-08-09 23:13
Hi everyone! I am a new member out of Port Jefferson, NY with a 1986 Cal 33-2, Peregrine. I was wondering if anyone has a set of rigging tension numbers for the shrouds/stays for the boat? Thanks in advance! Jay

The two entries in the "Tuning the rig" might help http://l-36.com/articles.php?menu=3#LInav10 <http://l-36.com/articles.php?menu=3#LInav10>But be aware that those Loos gauges are not accurate so if you get some numbers, make sure you compare with the same model number gauge. The attached letter from William Lapworth has info on tuning the rigging, sail and boat trim. Hope this helps. By the way, that is the same letter on my web site I provided the link to. I also provided a link to the instructions from the manuals that came with the Cal boats on tuning the rig. The same text appeared in almost all the boat versions manuals. I'm not sure that it matters, but the Cal 33-2 is not a Lapworth design. It has an upper, a cap, and two lowers on each side. Further, I don't know whether it is significant, but my boat is tuned exactly backwards from the Lapworth instructions, i.e. the aft lowers are tighter than the forward and they are both tighter than the cap and the uppers. I noticed this when I was measuring them to respond to the original question and was going to ask about it on here. It probably matters. I have heard some boat owners remove the forward lowers thinking them useless (and in the way). I never understood that but I guess with your example that is reasonable. Here is a more general discussion that comes with the Loos gaugages. I happen to disagree with what they say but that may be my quirk. http://l-36.com/pt2.php I would think the relative tightness of aft and forward lowers would have to do with what mast bend you would get and keeping the mast in column against strong loads in the forestay. Just a guess, I am no expert. Allen On Mon, Aug 10, 2009 at 6:56 PM, Al Waschka<aw… [at] bellsouth.net> wrote: > > > I'm not sure that it matters, but the Cal 33-2 is not a Lapworth design. Mark, Thanks for the Lapworth letter! It was informative. If I can't come up with a tuning guide I will use it as the basis to build my own data set. Allen, Absolutely. Nice write up btw! Still on my quest for a tuning guide. I have contacted a few lofts and riggers on the West Coast where the boat is much more common, hopefully my efforts will yield some fruit! Jay

Jay, I have the tuning guide that came with the boat when new. It is in the chart table, though, and I will not be to the boat until the 24th of August. I will bring it home with me and create a PDF and send to you and the list.
