Re: [Cal_Boats] Heeling, going fast, winning races

Papoose finished 1st tonight. We started with a 130 and moderate
winds. Used a free flying 150 (very light weight) for downwind
against all the other boats with spinnakers. No allowance given for
no spinnaker so we had our work cut our for us. We kept the 150 on
for the reach and had a terrible time taking it down and getting the
130 back up. I gave buoy room to a boat from the other class (15 min
sooner start) and tried to sail above them. The boat just stopped
relative to them. I then got directly behind them, pulled to leeward,
and drove right by them. I would never have thought it easier to pass
a boat to leeward than to windward but it certainly is. I had no
trouble passing them. Anyway, we held our own on the last windward
leg. I put up the 130 even though the crew wanted the 155. Boy was I
right. We were on our ear again, healing way too much, bubbling the
main like crazy. The wind stations report it was blowing 20 to 25.
We didn't flog it but then again the boat was healing up to 40 degrees
at times. My knee is a mess from trying to stay in position. I need
to install a saw horse in the cockpit to stand on.:-) We won by 1/10
second corrected.
So, at one point the guy on the jib sheet let all this sheet by all of
a sudden. He claims otherwise, but the whisker pole goes forward
against the forestay and bends a lot, maybe less than a foot but
visable. It has a permanent bend of 1.5 inches off center now.
Anyone know what I can do about that? Is that repairable or is it
time for a new section of pole? It is a 22 foot line control pole.

I should add that the pole section in question is 11 feet long and 1
1/2 inch OD with a bend of slightly less than one degrees about 2 feet
into the pole over probably a foot such that the end of the pole 9
feet away is 1 1/2 inch off center. There is no sign of the bend just
looking at the pole, in other words, it is not kinked.

I bought a new 11 foot section of 2 1/2 inch Forespar tube and the
pole will be good as new tomorrow. End of that problem.
