FW: Yanmar problem

Husar, Charlie [USA]2009-07-27 13:19 UTC
Hi, All. Got this note from a CAL 25 sailing buddy. Was wondering if there is any wisdom or experience with the problem. OK, OK. It is a J boat, but I try not to hold that against him. After all, it is a delivery. Many Thanks Charlie From: john pytlak [mailto:jr… [at] yahoo.com] Sent: Monday, July 27, 2009 8:32 AM Subject: Yanmar problem Hey all, Sorry for bugging ya'll. Just an FYI, I'm sending this to everyone I know that has touched a boat. Pat and I ran into some engine issues this weekend. Here's what I posted on Sailing Anarchy. Thanks for any help you might have!! John "So, I'm moving a J105 from Burlington, VT to Plattsburgh, NY on Sat. Breeze shits out and we fire up the engine. We're motoring along at 3/4 throttle (2700 RPM) for about 45-60 minutes when all of a sudden the engine redlines for no reason. I pull the fuel shut off within 3 seconds. As I do so there's black smoke out the exhaust. Now it won't even attempt to start. Starter won't spin. Not even the starter solenoid. Any thoughts? I was thinking I burned up an impeller as there is no H2o in the raw wawa sight glass and the engine seemed really hot. But that doesn't explain why it won't start now. Engine still spins freely when I manualy turn it over by hand at the crank. A neighboring owner said he thought injection pump. That wouldn't explain the no starter spin either........ Is there some sort of an engine electronic shut off relay to make sure a retard doesn't restart an overheated engine? That's all I can think of........ Oh, and no warning buzzers or anything came on before the redline and smoke. If I can't figure this out on my own, does anyone know of a trusted mechanic on Lake Champlain? The owner says just get it taken care of, and he'll pay. I want it fixed right, but don't wanna hit him hard with a knarley bill. Any thoughts would be awesome! Thanks ahead of time"

I don't have one of these, but... as a truck driver, I have seen MANY diesel engines run away. For that matter, I've seen it on Mercedes Benz diesels too. Usually it involves oil feeding into the combustion or something. If this happens, it can grenade the engine. If this didn't happen, it still could have messed something up. rev limiters don't matter when it runs away like that. best, Marsh Husar, Charlie [USA] wrote: > Hi, All.
