Mike, Pay the $100 and let the guys who know how do it. I Step and unstep my 29 every year at my club. We have a gin pole and an experienced steward who has never dropped a mast. Last year he stepped a Valiant 43 mast with our pole. 70's vintage Cal masts tend to be tree trunks . Our steward directs the crew, and his focus is safety, not how many boats are in line. Go to www.jacksonparkyachtclub to see a pic. They charge by the hour and I think it is about $100 to take it out. Mine is wood and keel stepped, about 47 feet tall (long). Probably half the weight is paint. Two people can carry it but not when it is upright. If yours is cabin top stepped, I have seen articles describing how do this without the crane. I will resist speculating on how it should be done. Depending on what version Cal-28 you have your mast may be the same or shorter than mine. Be careful though.
