Would-be Electro boat enthusiast
Danny2009-10-16 00:35
The following You Tube link is an interview with Bruce Schwab discussing a new battery technology for boaters. I had the privilege of installing and configuring the software navigation system on his boat Ocean Planet a few years ago before he left on the Vende Globe. Bruce set the US record for sailboat circumnavigation in OP.
It's this kind of technology that will make hybrid and electric boats more possible for us in the future. Check it our when you get 7 minutes.

I am totally stoked by that video. Of course, these new batteries are completely out of my price range right now, but, the development of this technology will be greatly aided by the demand in automobiles making the demand high and the eventual pricing to be commensurate with what I pay now for top of the line dry cell batteries. The charge rate is even more significant than the weight. To be able to charge a battery with a 300 amp alternator and go through 15,000 cycles before the battery is defunct is something that dreams are made of for cruising. thank you for sharing that!

FYI - LiFeP04 batteries in production use. Video mentioned the use in
e-cars. I recalled coming across these when looking for the battery bank
for Footloose's new Electric Yacht motor. - Kirk

Another source for this chemistry is EV Components with much better pricing ...

Keep in mind though that for Electric propulsion use 48V to 72V is the common voltage.

Thank you for that link also. My current batteries are over 8 years old and acting near the end of their life. I will probably investigate these as replacements -- light weight, longer life, faster recharge -- what's not to like?

maybe $16,000 price tag for one 360ah set? (not including controllers)
For that cost, I would also investigate fuel cells that run on propane... or some other technology.

Something to keep in mind is the economics of scale as more Hybrid cars become available the price of new battery types will come down.
I remember paying nearly $2000 for my first handheld GPS and now you can buy one for $75 which does just about everything but make the morning coffee!
For the moment my 48V propulsion bank (eight lead acid golf cart batteries) have another five years left in them so we will see what we see come time to replace them!
Exciting times!

The link I followed went to a $259.00 battery 8" x 8" x 4.5" with 4 3.2 volt cells linked together in series for 40amp hour service. Each weighs 13 pounds. This is getting into a reasonable price range to begin to consider this battery technology, but not quite there yet. I'm certain that the market for batteries of this sort is going to grow stronger by the day as we further develop wind and solar generated electricity.
I'm not sure how you calculated the $16,000 when they are selling complete replacement cells that will power a Prius for $1789.00.
